Of the 100 billion created, 20 billion XRP were retained by the creators, seeders, venture capital companies and other founders. The remaining 80 billion were given to Ripple Labs. Ripple Labs intends to distribute and sell 55 of that 80 billion XRP to users and strategic partners. Ripple Labs also had a giveaway of under 200 million XRP (0.002% of all XRP) via World Community Grid that was later discontinued. Ripple Labs will retain the remaining 25 billion.

As of November 30, 2012, 7.2 billion XRP have been distributed. The amount of XRP distributed can be found on the Ripple website and their movement tracked through the Ripple Live Network.

Serious question,

Why would anyone invest in ripple? Use, I can kind of understand (although I haven't) but invest, no chance.

Not really it shows more so that people using ripple have no idea what their XRP are really worth at any moment.

Thanks for clarifying, fudge. That is merely the total cap of Ripple (100B) and Coinmarketcap displayed this incorrectly, although it calculated the correct market cap from only the 8b in circulation at that time.

It switched to displaying only the coins in circulation shortly after. With the release of 20B more coins, Ripple's capitalization jumped from 38 to 138 million instantly... perhaps CMC should simply remove it Grin

Would have been better for Ripple to just let BitsharesX go above them. Makes them look even worse now...lol

That was such a dumb move....it just screams: "Oh noes, I'm afraid of the big bad BTSX"

Even if it was planned before BTSX showed up, the timing makes it look so dodgy.
Oh, well, it's their reputation on the line.

XRP as a currency might be shit, but the Ripple system seems to be good and with ~50 employees they have now it can be something big one day.

They didn't actually release any new coins, they just updated the figures to include the founders' allocation which for some unknown reason was missing from the numbers before.

But I agree that doing this now just to push above Bitshares and steal their limelight does't look good. I also find it strange since Ripple Labs seems to be doing everything it can to move Ripple away from the crypto currency scene and to get its users from traditional Financial Tech type companies.
