Did we ever really have any kind of privacy anyway? I am convinced they have been doing something like this for a long while now and they will continue to do so for as long as they are able to. 2. did you really think governments read through every boring phone call or email until they got to the good stuff... no for the last decade atleast they have had a good search engine to look for the key words like 'osama' 'bomb' 'nuclear explosion'

3. and where do you think google/youtubes funding came from to make the new feature of 'subtitles' which converts audio into text transcript, which was then searchable.. and then later released as a consumer service we have now as utilised as a simple 'subtitles'. google and microsoft have been working on voice to text for years, all funded by government.

4. all of your data is stored by agencies but unless your constantly talking using the key word flags, you will 99.99% will never have your phone call listened to or read.

5. oh and if you use google chromes browser for web broswer based chat where you see the small speaker icon in the tab.. its a subtle hint there recording that too. think of it more like a 'ear' rather then a speaker symbol.

The problem with all this spying and archiving is because it becomes moot after some point.

1.  Terrorists overseas are already untouched by the US law - so why do they care?



2.  Mark Karpeles has already been busted sending encrypted messages on the otherwise very public twitter.  Could any encrypted message be broken?  Yes but when we're talking about the scale that the NSA is resorting to it would mean a logistical nightmare for them.



If I recall some German agency made their employees switch over to typewriters but they could had just resorted to some encryption or some secret OS.

I would say that once the next election cycle (presidential) comes around, there will be many people (in congress) running on a platform to reduce the spying that the government does on it's own citizens and these people will likely win the election.

The effectiveness of the data collection should come into question when government do the budget.

We don't need a president to run (I said during the presidential election cycle, not the president himself) we just need enough congressmen and senators to be willing to scale back the patriot act and the powers of the NSA.

Well for now the main problem is when Big Data sets can be converted into measurable relevant data
If it can filter out all the noise then we have a problem.
Most of that data is social data so once they are able to get everyone's information innocent or not it brings the idea of anonymity to uncharted waters.
