Do a search for bootstrap.dat. It's a torrent and contains a large percentage of the data needed. After downloading it, put it into your bitcoin folder then start the client.

if you're in windows, after DLing the aforementioned bootstrap file,

run bitcoin-qt as bitcoin-qt -maxconnections=1 -connect=nogleg.com

then it should catch up the last couple of hundred (?) blocks as fast as your CPU can process

To get the latest bootstrap.dat torrent, the best way is to download it directly on bitcoin.org (in the bottom of https://bitcoin.org/en/download).

You should also open port "8333" to allow even more connections.

Yeah, go and find a mirror of the complete Blockchain. It's much faster downloading it from some fast mirror than waiting for the chain to trickle over the regular BitcoinQT connections! We really do need an incremental chain at some point...

I should have gotten into Bitcoin back in 1992...

To increase the download speed of the blockchain you should use an SSD hard disk (and a great connection of course).

An SSD drive isn't going to make a difference since any disk will out-perform your internet connection speed making the benefits of an SSD redundant.

SSDs only improve the access speed of data stored on the disk. It heavily speeds up you computer, but will do effectively nothing to the download speed of the Blockchain over a peer-to-peer system!
