Polygamy effectively decriminalized in Utah as judge strikes down ban in victory for husband and his FOUR wives who appear in TV show ‘Sister Wives’

Quote
A judge has ruled that parts of Utah's law banning polygamy are unconstitutional, effectively decriminalizing the practice, in a victory for the family that appears in the reality TV show 'Sister Wives'.
Kody Brown, who stars in the TLC reality show with his four wives, filed a lawsuit against the state after leaving Utah fearing prosecution after the programme aired.
Now a federal judge has issued his final ruling in the case that strikes down parts of the state's anti-polygamy law.

In this case, I am against criminalizing polygamy.

If 88-year old Hugh Heffner is free to maintain a live-in relationship with half a dozen teenage models, then I don't think we can prohibit a fundamentalist Mormon from marrying two women. Either criminalize both, or decriminalize both.

Personally, I don't agree with the principles of polygamy. But I am against imposing my views on others forcibly.

I actually have met this family. They are awesome. Im so glad that they won this suit.. To be forced to leave and live in Nevada was idiotic. I dont think that they will move back to Utah. Its kind of ironic that its even illegal, when the Mormons came to Utah they did so that they could practice their religion without prejudice or persecution. But they had to make it illegal to become a state.. I just find it all ironic..

Its kind of ironic that its even illegal, when the Mormons came to Utah they did so that they could practice their religion without prejudice or persecution.

What is more ironic is the fact that most of the people who prosecuted this family were mainstream Mormons. The "mainstream" Mormons want to wipe out the more fundamentalist groups, such as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) and the Church of the Firstborn
of the Fulness of Times.

Remember the raid on the YFZ Ranch? Most of the organizers of that raid were "mainstream" Mormons.

How much does he make that allow him to have such a big family? Does Utah enforce welfare abuser?

I've watched the show half a dozen times but it doesn't indicate what kind of business he was in prior to getting paid for this show.

That guy is pretty wealthy. He owns a very successful construction business and then he's got his reality show that im sure pays him pretty well. His homes in vegas are very nice, so are the homes in Utah. This guy is not abusing the welfare system.

Personally, I don't know too much about the principles of polygamy.
But polygamy deserve to be decriminalized  on the entire Earth  because of the low rate of childbirth around the globe, especially on the civilized countries (ex. Japan, S.Korea, Europe etc.) .
We already decriminalized the lesbians and the homosexuals, who aren't produced any viable offspring  Huh
Why not polygamy ?

The world population is growing rapidly as of now and so it is not one of the valid reasons to legalize polygamy (but IMO, it should be legalized to respect personal choices). Also, in the European Union and the United States, the population is growing through immigration, despite their low birth rates. The case of Japan is different. They have turned asexual.

Yes.

And Muslim culture practices Polygamy where ever they go. Look at the state of those Muslim countries or the one close by and see why polygamy is bad.

Right, but sometime, immigrate only wrong type of people, and this is not a good deal for the country who accept them.
Maybe we shall have less immigration and more natural childbirth growth. Polygamy is one of this ways. I mean we shall not force people into polygamy, but we shall open this option, like we did it for lesbian and gay people.
One man and more woman will have a bigger budget for growing properly more than 1-2 kids.

That is the problem with political correctness. Until the 1960s, it was mostly qualified people who were immigrating to the US and the EU. But that changed with the rise of political correctness. Nowadays, it is extremely difficult for a person with a Ph.D degree to migrate to the US. But at the same time, illegals with no college education are receiving all the welfare benefits, and are on their way to receiving the US citizenship.

I don't see why the government get's involved with contracts between adults. Who cares if he wants four wives. I can barely handle one, but if they all want to do it then let them.

Problem is the tax code and the welfare benefit at the federal and state level.

Polygamy open up all kind of tax deduction and benefit and become a drain for everyone else in the state and country.

I'm not against polygamy on principle but there's lots of these types that abuse the entitlement system under the guise of this religion. In the end, it doesn't really matter as there are plenty of 'normal' people abusing the system too. Phase out all forms of welfare starting tomorrow. W/i a few years, all of those having kids will be expected to feed, clothe and house them on their own dime. I bet that will be great for condom making companies.

I hadn't thought of that. Since the system was set up for couples, perhaps it could be gamed in all sorts of ways. I don't think you should be rewarded for the number of wives you have.  Cheesy

Hmm not that aware of the historical context but that sounds like a neat tid bit of history
Anyways I'm fine with the outcome of this suit myself.

We already decriminalized the lesbians and the homosexuals, who aren't produced any viable offspring  Huh
Why not polygamy ?

As long as it's not abused and is consensual I have no issues with this either.

As a Muslim, polygamy in anything is legitimate in Islam, but in polygamy is forbidden to marry a woman and her sister, poligamy can lower the rate of abortions, divorce, or adultery. Variety of other social ills can be reduced, Polygamy might be one of the problem solvers of social ills in the community. hopefully ...  Tongue

I fully support polyandry as long as there is decent legal framework around it.

Why should I care if there was 6 people who wanted one marriage?
