I'm thinking of going in heavy on XMR. Only reason I'm making this, really, is to get more suggestions than just XMR.

If you have 4 BTC in total, let me suggest that you keep 3 BTC in BTC and do what you will with the 1 remaining BTC. XMR would be a solid choice, IMO.

BTC and XMR
Don't put all your coins in an altcoin that is still in it's infancy, BTC is already pretty established and will do good enough on it's own.
I like canth's suggestion of 3 BTC and trade 1 BTC for XMR, it looks it won't go much lower than 0.0042 so this zone is a pretty good buying opportunity imo.

Ask yourself this - if you went into a coma for a few years, what would likely be around then? I feel it's reasonable that BTC would be around - thus the rational for keeping 75% of your coins there. XMR is a great altcoin, but it's 4-5 years behind the momentum and development that have gone into BTC and thus is far riskier. There is a non minimal possibility that either it fails or something with superior value comes along and replaces it.

Keep 2 BTC and put 1 btc into BitShares and the other into something you deem worthwhile.

It honestly depends on what you are looking for in an investment. Short term, plenty of suggestions above this one. There are quite a number of short term coins you can invest in that would be great for day traders. If you are looking for more long term investments, I suggest you get some Litecoin. Full disclosure, I own nearly all of my holdings in Litecoin and am fully ingrained in the Litecoin community. So you can take my suggestion with a grain of salt.

BTC and XMR
+1 to canth's & hodlmybtc's suggestions. (In saying this, I do realise that the OP is trying to seek alternatives and already has XMR on his/her radar).

Maieuticoin (formerly MMXIV). It's mathematically impossible for you to lose money buying at this price. Not to mention it's 50% yearly PoS, so you would even further increase your holdings after 24 hours when they start to stake https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=623884
