BitcoinSpinner has been around for some time now, and a lot has happened since it was announced back in November. In an effort to be more open I would like to share some BitcoinSpinner stats with the community. - Total installs to date: 816
- Active device installs: 503 (people we did not uninstall it again)
- Total installs with actual BTC in them: 303 (This is the one that really matters)
To be honest I had expected more active users when I started out. On the other hand, 300 is not bad at all, and the number is climbing slowly but steadily every day. Since the theme for BitcoinSpinner is ease of use, and getting up and running really quickly, I expect to get a large influx of users once Bitcoin hits the next level of adoption. We are not there yet, but I am ready. I would be very interested in getting some stats from other Bitcoin services. So, how is it going?

I had an idea looking at iPhone credit card readers:
Add a connectivity function to the same readers and enable it to read Bitcoin private keys. People could then have incentive to make Bitcoin debit cards.
Anyways, I thought I would throw this out there and see if it sticks. BitcoinSpinner might be the right app for this, maybe not.

The Communists say, equal labour entitles man to equal enjoyment. No, equal labour does not entitle you to it, but equal enjoyment alone entitles you to equal enjoyment. Enjoy, then you are entitled to enjoyment. But, if you have laboured and let the enjoyment be taken from you, then – ‘it serves you right.’ If you take the enjoyment, it is your right.

I installed BitcoinSpinner and liked it a lot. However I don't use it just because there's not alot of times I need to use Bitcoin. StrongCoin is doing ok. I have 1000+ registered users. Not sure how many are active I need to setup some aarrrr metrics.

To be honest I had expected more active users when I started out.
I just posted this on a post for StrongCoin where "feature requests" were being solicited. These would apply for BitcoinSpinner as well: A "merchant mode" so that it is functional as the only tool a merchant needs to accept bitcoins. e.g., Receive Bitcoins Enter amount in USDs and the Receive displays a QR code with the receiving bitcoin address and BTC amount. Notifications for receipt of coins to each address generated (and alert on on 0/unconfirmed). Notification to an email address that may not necessarily be tied to the same e-mail account used for sign-in. Bonus if another notification is sent if a double-spending attempt is detected (e..g, from a listening network). Ability to create and print a receipt, listing USD amount, BTC amount, date and time and transaction# for payment that was received. Ability to have all incoming payments swept to another address (e.g., at an exchange). [Update: Or on the consumer side: Some way to know that you are in the proximity of a merchant or exchange that accepts bitcoins, or near another BitcoinSpinner user that has configured to announce location to other BitcoinSpinner users. Or perhaps integrate with Sonar: - http://www.sonar.me - http://www.rotoloclass.com/2012/04/01/sonar-review - http://blog.laptopmag.com/hands-on-with-ambient-location-app-sonar-find-friends-wherever-you-go - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=MeSD0r41sZo#t=93s ]

In case you don't know if you edit your first post you can still change the title.

For MultiBit I tend to use the github download stats: https://github.com/jim618/multibit/downloadsMy release cycle is 2 to 3 weeks and the downloads are about 15 per day initially, dropping to 10 a day at the end of the cycle. I guess there are around 200 to 300 people overall downloading MultiBit. There is no way to know how many MultiBit wallets there are or their BTC totals. I think at the moment that we have not achieved 'breakout' into the wider community. There are probably 1000 people who come onto bitcointalk regularly (say once a week or more). Our overall download stats indicate that people within the bitcoin community try out software but it pretty much stops there. It is not necessarily a bad thing, as it takes a while to make things robust enough and simple enough for wider adoption.

i wanna revive this thread and ask jan to please update his numbers.
also, i saw that the app by andreas schildbach has 10000-50000 downloads in the google app store in the last 30 days. thats ten times the number it shows for spinner and would mean it has more installations than all other alternative clients combined. is that true? is there any way to get accurate numbers on this?

What an excellent idea. The number listed does not list installs for the last 30 days, but the (very inaccurate) total installs to date. Being the publisher of an app allows you to get pretty accurate numbers of device installs from Google Play. Here is what I reported April 13: ... - Total installs to date: 816
- Active device installs: 503 (people we did not uninstall it again)
- Total installs with actual BTC in them: 303 (This is the one that really matters)
... The page: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.miracleas.bitcoin_spinnerreports 1000-5000 installs today. The accurate numbers are: - Total installs to date: 1501
- Active device installs: 918 (people who did not uninstall it again)
- Total installs with actual BTC in them: 562 (This is the one that really matters)
The numbers have nearly doubled over less than four months. Not bad everything considered. The UI is not really sexy, but it's fast, secure, and easy to use.

For the desktop clients the new bitcoin.org clients page has made a huge difference to downloads: http://bitcoin.org/clients.htmlFor MultiBit the downloads are regularly 60+ a day and I know Armory's downloads are similarly higher. (Cannot find any Electrum download figures). If you look at alexa.com, bitcoin.org is quite a 'big' site (ranking about 40,000) so I am guessing most of the increased downloads are from more traffic. The Android devs might want to put together a similar page for smartphone clients.

Fornit asked me to post download statistics here. As of today, Bitcoin Wallet has been installed 12640 times (not counting re-installs or updates), but only 3588 are still active.

I am soon going on vacation and have been thinking about a small project to do. Now, my wife has declared that there will be no coding going on. Reading your post gave me this brilliant idea. My project will be to make a BitcoinSpinner guide. I'll make a PDF that will link from BitcoinSpinner's Settings -> Help option. It will basically be a HowTo describing best practices on how to secure your coins using BitcoinSpinner. I'll throw in a section describing my motivation to make BitcoinSpinner as a free service that costs me $130 to keep alive every month and countless hours.

If you do not trust the backup/restore functionality try it with 0.1 BTC or ask some of the other 500 forum members who use it. Back to topic.

Fornit asked me to post download statistics here. As of today, Bitcoin Wallet has been installed 12640 times (not counting re-installs or updates), but only 3588 are still active. I have used all mobile wallets available, at the time anyway. The blockchain never completed with this application. Now I think it was be unrealistic to hold 2gb on my phone. Paytunia I had high hopes for but booted out on my model of phone. filled a bug report to them and recieved no response. Bitcoin spinner was nice, but after coins were deleted from a family members phone (from a friend knowing what apps would not be needed for them, shhesh) I saw this as impractical for new users. I would use this myself in a flash. Blockchain app is what I use now. very elegant. makes things all nice and linked aswell.

Given that Bitcoiners are sufficiently spread out that they don't meet in person very often, and shops that accept Bitcoins are rare, the numbers being posted here are actually pretty high.
Blockchain download and management has become more robust over time for anything based on bitcoinj, but there is still quite some improvements left to make.
