This UN Commander must be investigated for possible connivance with ISIS terrorists. 45 Fijian UN troops still being held captive by the al qaida link terrorists.

Brilliant advice I must say. Give the heathens another bargaining chip (AKA - the potential to execute more people and gear up the west even further for military action). The propagandists are bending over backwards on this one.

Unfuckingbelievavle. Surrender to a bunch of guys who are likely to chop your heads off... I know the situation was a bit complicated, but that sounds like a really poor decision by UN commander.
Props to the Filipino troops

Quote
According to General Greg Catapang, when the Syrian rebels suffered casualties during the 7-hour gunfight with the Filipinos, jihadist reinforcements came and the UN Commander renewed his order to the Filipino soldiers to surrender to the enemy.

When the Filipinos defied the UN Commander's order once more, the Commander said the Filipinos were on their own and would not be rescued by the UN.

So the soldiers were forced to hatch an escape plan by themselves (without UNDO's approval) which was relayed to and approved by Manila. Then, the soldiers escaped through land mines to evade capture.

Probably some idiot under the payroll of the ISIS. I can't believe that something like this happened, just days after the ISIS executed hundreds of surrendered Syrian soldiers near the Tabqa airfield.

That said, what sort of peacekeepers these people are, if they can't drove off less than a hundred terrorists armed only with light weapons? If they can't even secure their own safety, then what sort of peace they are going to deliver in the conflict zone?

I could probably understand such decision if the peacekeepers were confronted with 'civilised' enemy, complying with the international humanitarian law etc. then it would be wise not to risk their lives and become 'prisoners of war'. But since that's definitely not the case for ISIS, such order was plain stupid.

You geniuses do realize this has nothing to do with ISIS, right?
ISIS is hundreds of kilometers away. The rebels in question here are Jabhat al-Nusra. They also originally stemmed from Al-Qaeda in Iraq, but they are mortal enemies of ISIS.
Right now, ISIS is confined to the north-eastern corner of Syria while Jabhat al-Nusra works mostly in the south-west, so they pretty much steer clear of each other. But they have fought each other before and they may do so again. They are certainly no allies and they are not to be confused with each other.

As for the situation in question, it should be noted the UN commander did negotiate a deal which should have allowed the UN to free both the Fijian and the Filipino peacekeepers. Unfortunately, the deal fell through because the Filipinos defied orders. Now the Filipinos got away but the Fijians are still stuck.

I'm not necessarily saying that the UN commander made the right call. But I am saying that I don't know the full details of the situation and I do not understand the intricacies involved, and therefore I am not qualified to pass judgment. Since nobody in this thread seems to even know which rebels are involved, I'd guess none of you are qualified to pass judgment either.

Al Nusra and the ISIS are not mortal enemies. For sure there are some differences between the two, but they are united by their common enemy (Bashar al Assad). And both the organisations receive funding from the Saudi and Qatari royal families, who exert a lot of influence over them. To this date, both the terrorist groups remain affiliated to the Al Qaeda.

None of that is even remotely true.

Al Nusra and the ISIS are not mortal enemies.

They've been fighting on-and-off since at least February (Just one example of a source).

They have killed hundreds of each other's men (Source), including senior figures (Source, one of many). How else could you possibly define mortal enemies?

they are united by their common enemy (Bashar al Assad).

Both have been fighting each other (and other rebel groups) far more than Assad in recent months. This is sometimes credited as one of the main reasons for Assad's recent regained strength in many key areas. In fact, Jabhat al-Nusra (and other rebels) often accuse ISIS of tacitly collaborating with Assad by targeting mostly other rebels (Source, also see previous source).

And both the organisations receive funding from the Saudi and Qatari royal families, who exert a lot of influence over them.

These are silly rumors. The Saudis and Qataris (together with the US, Turkey and others) have been funding the moderate rebels who fight against both Jabhat al-Nusra and ISIS. They have no interest in funding either one of these organizations. Show me one half-credible source for this claim.

To this date, both the terrorist groups remain affiliated to the Al Qaeda.

Well, this is very famously false (Source, source and source).

But Jabhat al-Nusra is still affiliated with Al queda which is not a moderate but a terrorists organization. ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra is both terrorists.  Negotiation and any deal with terrorists is not an option here.

Are you saying that UN commander managed to get a deal of releasing Fijians and Filipinos before even Filipinos got captured?

''Surrendering to terrorist'' I thought it was against the rules of engagement of fighting Al Qaida and all other groups. A very irrational decision, in my point of view this action will only make these people feel the urge to carry on rather than surrender. Believe me there will soon be a televised show case of blood shed of members of this troops sent to CNN pretty soon due to this action.

The UN Commander who order is UNDOF Force Commander General Iqbal Singh Singha of India. Now he totally denied that he ordered the Filipinos to surrender but not shoot back to the terrorists.  Smiley
If the Filipino troops does not shoot they will be captured.

Quote
The order was simply "not to shoot," he said.

UNDOF Force Commander General Iqbal Singh Singha decision is fully supported by U.N.'s under-secretary-general for peacekeeping, Herve Ladsous from France.

Quote
In that meeting, Ladsous expressed full support for Singha, diplomats who were present told Reuters. Ladsous later told reporters that Singha had "exercised good sound judgment all along" during the crisis.

Then it does not surprise me. The Indian peacekeepers have a very bad reputation all around the world. An example here:

http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/indian-army-shamed-action-against-jawan-for-fathering-child-congo-india-today/1/234613.html

And moreover, this guy is from the Indian state of Punjab. The officers from there have a reputation of being extremely corrupt. I just hope that he will be replaced by someone who is more competent.

Al Qaeda Group To Try 45 Captured U.N. Peacekeepers Under ‘Divine Law’

Quote
The Al Qaeda-linked Al-Nusra Front rebel forces, which captured 45 UN peacekeepers from Fiji on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights last Wednesday, said the captured men are to stand trial, Sharia style.
