Press Release:
Background
Wampum (originally called Wampumpeag) are traditional shell beads of the Eastern Woodlands tribes of the indigenous people of North America.  Wampum was the first currency used in the American colonies and remained in use until the early 1700's.  We use the term "Wampum" in honor of the Wampanoag and Narragansett people who helped Roger Williams and some other liberty minded people (mostly Baptists) establish the first government in all the world since the creation of humanity where soul liberty was the rule of law - people were free to believe what they wanted and worship how they wanted without fear of persecution.

About
Wampum is based on the same technology as other cryptocurrencies (e.g. Bitcoin, Litecoin, etc). However, it operates in a significantly different way. It has been 100% pre-mined. This means that the complete set of 1,000,000,000,000,000 (one quadrillion) Wampum has been already created, and therefore there is no Wampum mining. *Note that this amount is less than half of the total number of bitcoin "[Satoshi](https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Units)" units!*

The decision to pre-mine was taken by the coin's founder, Derek Peterson, to avoid the typical *get rich quick* behavior that has beset many other crypto currencies, and to create an equal playing field for underprivileged people all over the world who cannot afford mining equipment. Instead, Wampum are acquired through participation in partner sites, fulfilling altruistic and activist related bounties, or by purchasing Wampum directly on crypto-exchanges.  Learn more about how to earn Wampum. http://wampum.org/earn-wampum/

In Peterson's own words:
Quote
"We don’t do mining but you can earn Wampum through participation with our partner sites or just being a generally good person. If your main goal in life is to become an altcoin billionaire this isn’t the place for you but if you would like to get involved in actually making a difference in other people’s lives and in return get a little credit (Wampum) for your efforts than welcome."

Technical Details
Given the absence of rewarded mining in Wampum, the technical details are less relevant than with other cryptocurrencies. However, for the technology minded or curious - the block target time of Wampum has been set at 12 seconds, and advanced check pointing has been adopted (as introduced by Feathercoin(http://www.coindesk.com/feathercoin-secures-block-chain-advanced-check-pointing/) to prevent transaction reversals of the block chain. Wampum has also taken a forward looking stance and adopted the [NeoScrypt](http://www.feathercoin.com/neo-scrypt-press-release.pdf), which is an ASIC resistant proof of work algorithm based on [Scrypt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrypt).

A full list of Wampum specifications is posted at http://wampum.org/wampum-specifications/
and there is a web-based block chain explorer at http://explorer.wampum.org/.

*  We can not allow cussing or the absolute craziness that runs so rampant on this site in this discussion.  We understand this is a very different distribution model than most all of the other coins and many will not understand what we are all about so please feel free to ask.  Thanks!

Just to be clear.
1.)  We have been trading in WAMPUM for several years on various projects.
2.)  Cussing and craziness will not be tolerated here at all.  If you don't like our project move on to something else.

Thanks!

Just to be clear, this has nothing to do with Wampumcoin [WAM], http://wampumcoin.com, Bitcoin-Corporation.com, or the next phase of our plans (to be revealed soon).

Yes, please, let's be clear about that.  We really don't want folks to be mixed up about the 2 projects.  BTW - the original dev of wampumcoin got the idea for the term Wampum from one of the folks we were speaking with about investing in some of our projects.  He nor you, have any connection or purpose to the name.  And BTW - we have owned the domain name wampum.org for many years, been trading in Wampum for many years and BTW - we own much IP regarding the term "wampum" and we would like to have a discussion with you regarding this issue.

Oh an by the way, Wampumcoin.COM has bee owned for 11 years longer than the .org and a .com is MUCH better than a .org.  You sound from your post that you are somehow trying to take the stand that "Wampum" is your name and your alone.  You deleted my earlier posts, making your credibility go WAY down on top of your sarcastic words to the real Wampum dev.  This coin was released to the public WAY before yours was, I think it is YOU that needs to revisit your choice of a coin name!

There, no cuss words......think this will likely still get deleted but whatever, at least a few will be able to read before you do.

This is just ridiculous and you are VERY irritating the way you came out with this!!!

I REALLY hope nobody supports this coin or the person behind it, this is WRONG!!!!!!!!

Congratulations IMJIM!  You wrote like 3 paragraphs without dropping an F bomb!!  I am very proud of you,  knew you could do it.  I deleted your earlier posts because you used a ridiculous amount of cuss words.  I'm really not trying to start a fight with anyone.  You came here cussing me out because you are a holder of a struggling coin and hope to make some btc out of it some day, I get it.  I'm sorry if you find us irritating because we are getting in the way of your big dreams but seriously you need to move on.  You are not ever gonna get any btc from that other coin and you really won't fit in well with our community.  You only make yourself look foolish and greedy by making such statements with no real reasons or logic behind them.  And the other wampumcoin folks came into our PRE ANN and tried to be condescending to us.  I didn't go picking a fight with them at all but I will oblige them.

AND since you are very wrong regarding your statement about "wampumcoin.com" being owned by these guys for 11 years I will accept your apology in advance.  If you would just go and do a simple whois lookup on wampum.org and wampumcoin.com you will see how wrong you are.  And I fully understand what makes a domain name valuable, I own many of them.  We chose the .org because it more closely lines up with what we are about.

Let me help you a bit:
Domain Name: WAMPUMCOIN.COM
Registry Domain ID: 1839448981_DOMAIN_COM-VRSN
Registrar WHOIS Server: whois.godaddy.com

They bought that domain name 1 week after I had a meeting with an investor who was under an NDA.  After our meeting this investor went and told the name "wampum" to the original dev. of wampumcoin and they tried to do their own thing and got what they deserved and it is not over for them yet.  As I said I have been trading in Wampum for many years, since 2011...you really are just making stuff up.

If you have a sincere question about how we plan to operate please do ask, I will be happy to answer you but if you are just here to be crazy please move on to something else.  Thanks!

A quadrillion coins? This is very  interesting, some coins out there are dead with only millions in total supply. Are you offering something new or innovative that will make this coin stand out from the rest. Good luck!

Hi altseeker!  Thanks for the great question and well wishes!! We do have some rather innovative features on the tech side of things or at least the coolest bells and whistles in the crypto world:  NeoScrypt, auto checkpointing, coolest retargetting solution out there and probably will soon have a block limiter solution in place but since we are doing all the mining internally none of it really matters to the community except to insure the network stays up under attacks and transactions aren't ever reversed even with the relatively low hash rate of our internal miners.

The big difference between us and most other alts, is in our distribution model.  We don't do mining but instead give out Wampum to people for doing good things.  For example, on our health site, users can post their personal health issues, anonymously of course, and others can come in and offer them support and advice and they earn wampum for doing so. (eg.  their answers to questions are upvoted, etc etc etc - many ways to earn wampum on that site).  Currently there is no real way for some construction guy to earn any coins through mining.  It is mostly just ppl who work in the tech field doing all the mining and even worse only those who can afford such an investment, which leaves out 90% of the world.  With our distribution model anyone can earn Wampum!

Regarding the issue of "scarcity" -  We are trying to stick to whole numbers and avoid the decimal thing...BTC actually has 2.1 quad satoshis so they actually have more than double our supply as does all the other alts.  We are distributing Wampum much slower than most any other alt I have heard of - quick distribution is what destroys price...people getting too many coins too quickly and too easily.  That full 1 quad isn't the amount actually in circulation, We minted it and have it in storage. The circulation numbers can be found on http://www.wampum.org and will be updated regularly.

All that being said, the purpose of this coin is to help people and make a difference in the world not for anyone to get rich, especially not any of us.

Wampum were basically shell beads typically made from quahogs.  This wiki page can give you some idea although there is some debate as to exactly how the Native Americans used the individual "wampum" beads.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wampum

And here is the brief history we wrote up on our site as to why we used the term wampum:  http://wampum.org/history-of-wampum/

I was raised in RI on the Narragansett Bay, where wampum was typically made through a very difficult manual process.  When the colonists realized the Native Americans valued these beads they started mass producing them in factories which drove the value down and made them basically worthless.  The term is not used much today but when I was a child my grandfathers used it often to refer to something of no value.  Smiley  My great grandfather ^11 Roger Williams, is actually the one who anglicized the term and put in the first translated dictionary.

Hi,

"original developer": There would be some contention and hostility from me if I ever meet them, for reasons that have been stated in a number of places on the net. For sure.

"He nor you, have any connection or purpose to the name": That's a really strange opinion, but it doesn't hurt and there is no law against. We're not going anywhere. I and some others swear by it. Seems you would know that there are other interesting things that can be done with a cryptocurrency besides financial profiting.

Wampumcoin.com was bought for bitcoin corporation in April of 2014. Bitcoin Corporation, nor any of it's representatives had anything to do with it prior to that, including any meetings or talks with anyone other than the purchase of assets related to "wampumcoin". And they were virtual, unfortunately.

I typed here only one post prior to this one and, though I enjoy violence as much as anyone other healthy human being, I certainly didn't intend to be condescending. Since someone in the public had SPECIFICALLY directed us to this thread we realized that it was beneficial and important for both coins that we come and simply state clearly that the "wampum.org" project was completely unconnected to "wampumcoin.com" or it's coin. If an apology is needed for creating condescension, I apologize.

Good luck to you.
