Simple question - Can I build a rig that I can connect to the internet only as needed to upload/download or do I have to remain connected constantly? Thanks SF

Connected constantly. Agree, while mining you need to be connected. e.g. you have to announce your new block to whole community. p.s. "offline mining rig" sounds to me like a joke

you need to be online all the time when you are mining , otherwise your miner gets disconnected and you will have no earning.

You cannot mine without being connected to internet, to prove that you should try now.

As the others said, you cannot find any block if you aren't connected, all the coins works in this way.

Thank you for verifying what I deep down knew. I just have free electricity in one place and free bandwidth at another - I was hoping to connect - download string - store in cache - disconnect Move to free electricity - compute - then re connect again later to upload/announce new coin. Oh well - thanks anway SF PS That does sound like a joke - A Priest, A Rabbi and a DogeCoin walk into an Offline Mining Rig.................

Effectively you can mine without being connected to the internet, at least solo-mine. Pool mining to a certain extent as well. But as soon as a new block is being found, your machine needs to receive that block (or new work when mining in a pool) so it can mine for a possible next block.

You need to be connected. Good thing is miners don't use up a lot of data. So constant yes, huge amount no.

Without the ability to broadcast your 'locally' processed Proofs of work to the rest of the network this would make very little sense indeed. Sure, you could essentially mine every single coin you want running in local mode but if those found blocks aren't broadcast to the rest of the coin network whether it be bitcoin, dogecoin or whatever your not really mining if you ain't online. Too bad about having the free internet and electricity in different locations. Internet can't be that expensive where you have the free electric, have you considered just getting a low-cost connection at your free electricity location? Bandwidth requirements for mining are pretty small.

mining does not use the internet without a stable, mining process running if connected to the Internet, in other words, mining can not be done if you are in offline state, you should know also that in addition to a stable internet connection, preses mining also requires electrical energy is not a little ...

"offline mining rig" sounds to me like a joke what about you have more then 1 rig(lan connected), you could create your own nodes, and your own coin, without internet, no profit ok, but at least it's possible i think

How did you actually do that? I mean, could you point out exactly how you attempted that? I think it's rather difficult to get any mining software to run offline, isn't it? They depend on a steady internet connection to receive/broadcast PoWs!

Being connected all the time is mandatory as you have to send and announce your block otherwise what is the point in doing it? Really could not even begin to work out how offline mining would work?

None of the algorithms available (SHA-256, Scrypt, Scrypt-N, X11-2001, CN) allow for offline mining as they all depend on the network for integrity. I'm sure some non-profit coin could used staged work that could be submitted at somewhat regular intervals but not the crypto currently available as we know it.

Well, it doesn't really depend on the actual hashing algorithms. It's merely the fact that you need to find a hash according to the latest state of the blockchain. If you find a solution to the latest block, you better distribute it ASAP, you won't be able* to use it for the next block! *actually the odds are just astronomically low

Sadly, you can't keep all the share and upload all at once. Cloud mining is what you are looking for..
