this place is like the wild west, everyone is going to say their exchange  or another exchange is great. coinex.pw got hacked and i actually had like .1 btc worth of altcoins there i just played around with, they have been down for awhile and "said they would repay everyone" yeah right. mtgox got screwed. Gmail today got hacked for 5 million email accounts + passwords in plain text(meaning it was decrypted or not encrypted).  if google and apple and microsoft and twitter and facebook can be hacked what in gods green earth is it goingi to take before you UNDERSTAND EXCHANGES WILL BE HACKED TOO!!!!!!!

every single person who says anything to you about "this exchange is great" is a total fucking idiot.

these companies i named spend hundres of MILLIONS OF USD on security and STILL GET HACKED. give up this whole exchange idea and secure it all yourself, b e paranoid, horde stuff, print paper walllets and make crazy insanse passwords/private keys.

FUCK EXCHANGES.

Sorry to learn about your past losses with Gox.  You may want to look at Coin Source as an optoin to get some advice and also explore all viable options.  Coin Source is at very least worth the time it will take to be vetted.  I've only browsed the site and have yet to use the service but I've been meaning to.  If you do try them out please post a review of some kind, please and thanks.  Good luck

BitStamp, CoinBase, BTC-e all are reasonable.

Don't leave much money on them for long though, just use them for their intended purpose - exchange not fiat/btc bank.
