Remember this: if you don't have direct control of the private keys controlling the addresses where your bitcoins are stored, then they aren't really your bitcoins. The blockchain.info wallet is a great place to store small quantities of bitcoins for easy spending because of their superb mobile app, but you really should import your private key into a desktop client under your control just in case something like this happens.

I had set blockchain.info to backup my wallet to Dropbox and Google drive.. However, today when I checked, the last backup on Google drive is from 5th March 13 and on dropbox is from 17 Feb 13. I had a couple of more addresses since 5th with about 0.5 btc on them which are not there in my backup from Google drive (which I imported into Multibit).
I was under the assumption that the backups are automatic everytime a new address is added. Are they not?
The downtime is quite sudden. Why didn't they notify it in advance?

Blockchain and similar services are great and quite secure as long as you have your own up-to-date backup. Also running the validator plugin doesn't hurt if one wants to be completely sure.
Hopefully it will be back soon though, and everything is fine. It's probably the most popular Bitcoin wallet of all wallets these days.

I was under the assumption that the backups are automatic everytime a new address is added. Are they not? It's a feature you have to turn on. Be careful though because it diminishes your privacy since it needs access to your public keys in order to know when a change happens (I think, or is this just for notifications..?) The downtime is quite sudden. Why didn't they notify it in advance?
They posted on twitter that they're having database issues so I don't think it was expected. Also running the validator plugin doesn't hurt if one wants to be completely sure.
Either that or the browser extension.

Yes. *Wipes forehead in relief.* It'll just pop in your account when the site gets back online/their blockchain catches up with the transactions if it was lagged.
