I tried installing Electrum on Linux Mint (debian) from instructions on their download site https://electrum.org/download.html. I skipped the second command, "sudo apt-get install python-slowaes", as it seems to be specific to Ubuntu. But as the failure log mentions slowaes perhaps I need to use it anyway?

I've asked at linux mint forum, one reply says to use the 2nd line (I skipped above), but I'd like to know what you guys think first. Thanks.

tia, Louis.

Linux Mint.. do you run v 17 or later? You should have Electrum in the repository, don't you.  That would be the best way to download and keep it updated.
