I'm also looking for advice on the fastest way to buy bitcoins. Security being a secondary concern, how would one get started fast, just to try it out, with an inconsequential amount, like $5 or so?

Some people, including myself, will accept cash in the mail for BTC.  Cash is usually valued highly (no chargebacks) so I would pay Mt. Gox rate spot on if you sent me cash.  The only real fee for using this method is the cost of a postage stamp.
