We had our first Silicon Valley Bitcoin Meetup at the Hacker Dojo.  It was well attended and the folks had plenty to say!  Such a cool subject of course!  We discussed the same stuff that you see here on the forum, but its great seeing people face-to-face and discussing things in depth.  Folks continue to be worried about getting shutdown but the gov't or bankers or some shadowy other entity, but there is work to do now and folks seem to be committed to working on projects now for the most part.

We came up with a list of projects to get going on now.  My favorite is too hard to do now, but it would be great, and it came from this forum - its making a bitcoin currency exchange thats distributed so there is no exchange site dependency when an exchange rate is needed.  A nebulous distributed exchange would make bitcoin nearly bulletproof.

We liked the bitbills with the holographic QR codes at bitbills.com.

There was much talk about the current volatile market and the speculation that's been seen on Mtgox in the past few days.  Somebody has been making large purchases.

Practically we want to get a few specific projects going:

1) Get a good bitcoin plugin for the popular online vending platforms.  Some of the guys know about that.
2) Take over an open source bitcoin project that's been started by one of the dudes.
3) Create an Android app store site that's powered by bitcoins

It was so well attended that I had to end the meeting at 830pm while there was still discussion going on, and at 9pm it was still going!  I left at 9pm and nobody else left!  They could still be there for all I know!

That's a great bunch of passionate folks!  That's what it takes to make things happen.  We'll meet again next month same time and place, and I expect we'll have more specific project details to talk about by then.

The dude from South America did not show up!  What happened to you?

Great work!  thank you for the encouraging report.  I am the Las Vegas meetup coordinator, and our first meeting is coming up in 2 weeks.  EVERYONE should start a meetup in your city.  This is probably one of the most effective things you could do to further the cause and popularity of bitcoin!
