The easiest way IMHO is to create a BIP38-encrypted paper wallet with bitaddress by saving the html to your pc and running it offline. You can refer to http://www.coindesk.com/information/paper-wallet-tutorial/
You can also use Electrum or Armory to set up a cold wallet on your USB.

You should look into the Trezor device, it seems like the ideal way to do cold storage imo.

The easiest way would be just to store your wallet on a usb or something. Creating Paper wallets can be tricky and daunting. Backing up your wallet offline is much easier in several ways.

If none of the above guides help then you should check my guide: http://www.btcguys.us/blog/how-to-create-bitcoin-paper-wallet-tutorial

Benefits:
-verifying integrity of files downloaded from web with signatures (ie files have not been tempered with)
- using Ubuntu Live usb to create secured offline wallets
- encrypting and decrypting private keys for maximum security and peace of mind

if you have any questions or feedback let me know!

IMO, it is better to place the encrypted paper wallet or USB in a few different safe places (eg. your home and a safe deposit box in your bank) so that you won't lose your wallet accidentally in a disastrous event (eg. robbery or fire).

Trezzor is the best way to keep your coins.

+1 for Trezor.
The only problem I have with it is the slightly high price.
If you have 50 btc to be protected, that $119 isn't much. But if you have only a bitcoin, the Trezor isn't worth it.
