if you are thinking about mining bitcoin with cpu then result will null
you should try mining some CPU coins with your i7 CPU
to mine bitcoin you need ASIC mining hardware or mining farm

What CPU coins are there, are they worth much? Is there any profit in it?

There are 20 altcoins listed on http://cpucoinlist.com/, but it seems to me that they are GPU-mineable already...
I don't think CPU mining is profitable at all.

you can mine but you will get almost nothing with i7...  You need ASIC Chip based Bitcoin Miner or some Super Computer.  Please do not use Government or Work Place Super Computer to mine BTC.  It's not worth getting into trouble

You should mine some CPU only altcoin or some that can be nicely mined with CPU. I mine Monero from end of May with 4 threads of i5.

Nice suggestion, but monero seems to be not profitable for me.

The better computing power you have the faster you can mine. Better gear=better return.

Doge is using the scrypt algorithm and scrypt ASICs are all over the place. Those ASICs can hash thousands time faster than your CPU, and so you can't compete with the other miners.
