Nothing happens with no effort. The 'gen=1' option mentioned above would make you wallet mining with CPU. For the most coins it is unprofitable anymore, for some coins, like cryptonote-based, it has nearly the same profit as GPU mining these coins, for some, like Primecoin, it seems the only reasonable way to mine it. But in all these cases 'gen=1' option would consume your CPU resources, so you would pay the electricity (don't do this using your notebook as you will have to pay for the new one soon). As for wallet's config file you should play with it if you are going to use any external to the wallet mining option: GPU, ASIC, optimised cpuminer of different kind. The forum is full of the info how to mine coins: spend your time to find out.

I have a block erupter but I can't figure it out. I am not trying to mine a lot of coins, I just wanted to know how this worked and let everyone know how it works so that this is known. I write for Devcoins, so mining a CPU amount over night every once in a while wouldn't be bad.

How would someone access the "config file" or whatever?

As you write for Devcoins, so you are expecting to get some credit for your writing, spend some time to read the forum: it is full of complete guides how to mine. Again: nothing happens with no effort.

I have read TONS of threads about mining, and I have downloaded ALL KINDS of stuff (GUI and BGF and whatever, I am not a computer person, I don't remember all the acronyms) and I just can't figure it out.

I even have a block erupter, and I can't figure out how to make it work, even though I know where this thread is.

Just to use a wallet there is no need to be a programmer to read the documentation written in living language. You need not to go deep into the details how exactly transactions are signed, what algorithms are in use and how these algorithms applied.

If you want to mine a coin in most cases you would choose to use some mining pool to connect your mining equipment to. Every pool's site has instructions how to mine with them, not counting all the info you could find in this particular forum.

The staking is simple as buy coins, send them to your wallet and keep the wallet running. This also is covered in every PoS-based coin related thread/web-site.

If you want an advanced mining then you have to be a bit more advanced than average people.



When a tech writer too lazy to look into the docs or not able to understand an area he is trying to write about then he usually hires a specialist who explains the topic and answers writer's questions.

Some people have responded about "Minting" when I think you are asking about "Mining". Minting is specific to POS (Proof-of-Stake) coins, some of which have already been mentioned. With POS, all you have to do is have a balance and you can leave your wallet open, or just open it every few days/weeks, let it sync up the blockchain, and it will start minting coins based on your balance and the programmed interest percentage.

Now, in order to mine with your wallet, all you have to do is open the wallet, let it sync up the blockchain, then (I am at work and going off of memory here since I don't have a wallet on my work computer, so I may be wrong) I believe it is click on "Options" and then "Debug console". The "Debug Console" will open a window where you can type in commands. The command to start mining is "setgenerate true" (without the quotation marks). There are other commands you can use where you can set up the number of cores to be used, assuming you have a multi-core processor. You could probably do a google search and get those commands if you were so inclined to try and play around with that. The command that Spoetnik mentioned is one of those commands. By the way, Spoetnik is a very brash and abrasive person, but he is a very knowledgeable person with regards to crypto, so don't take anything he writes personally.

what i ended up doing way back was creating a windows batch file that adds that string to my clipboard..
then i created a shortcut to it in my custom re-created XP style *hidden "quick-launch" i use / made on Windows 7 x64
so i click once and that string is on my clipboard to paste into the console
ya i'm weird
my UI is custom to hell and back like crazy

I have studied the History of Devcoin. And I know everyone thinks it isn't valuable, but if it went up in value, the writers of Devtome would be the most well known Bitcoin whales.

Right now DVC is 10 satoshis, and everyone is like "see how bad it is doing" but when you get paid half a million DVC for every 1,000 words you write, it kinda proves to you that 10 satoshis is a pretty HIGH price. And if it goes up, it is just getting BETTER.

And as I have studied the history of Devcoin, I can also tell you what the main problem is. The main problem is that their are a bunch of writers (some of whom have been doing this 3 years or more) collecting MILLIONS of DVC every month. And they HOLD those coins.

Now, this method would make sense if they bought the coins, because then they would have been in the market and as the writer bought them, they would be boosting the value of DVC itself. But instead, they are getting free coins by the millions and holding them. And not only that, but they tell other people that they way to make DVC grow is to hold any coins you get...

So it stagnates, because everyone is just getting free coins and holding them. It's just stupidity that makes Devcoin look so bad.

And not only that, but the DVC community looks down on anyone that sells the coins they earn writing, even though that is the best way to get people to know Devcoin exists.

So they are quite literally (I know it is figuratively, I just mean literally as in, this is no small thing they are doing) shooting themselves in the foot, on a regular basis.

If someone went right now and sold 200,000,000 Devcoin for half price, it would change everything forever. Tons of people would start selling their coins, tons of new people would buy coins, and suddenly the Devcoin community would be in motion.

when a so called "high stake" return crypto is both PoW and PoS mined you can have multiple entry points.

I wouldn't look at "adoption" is the currency sense of goods and services as the primary driver right now - but rather look at your own inherit interest and know that you may have answered the question.

stick to the PoW/PoS variants and the ones in which the PoW is continuous is my advice - two i know for sure are Caps and HBN Hobonickles .
