I am a young millennial and my parents graduated from university in the late 1960s (they had me late / I was the youngest in a big family).

According to my parents, a degree back then didn't result in any job unless you knew someone in the government. Both my parents, after completing their Bachelor's Degree, had to pursue professional designation programs.

Myself I have a degree but I never entertained any illusion that it was going to get me a job at some Hedge Fund or throw me on top of the waiting list for a job in some government agency or service.

I have a Bachelor's Degree but my only options with that were to attain a Masters / PhD and then slave away as an adjunct professor for over a decade, or attend technical school, or attend some professional designation program.

I went with the technical school and now I am in an apprenticeship program. There are some 18 and 19 year olds in my program but, to my surprise, I found that more than half the class was older than me but I seemed to be one of two people who had a degree.

I intend to work in an oil field when the opportunity comes.

My Father insisted once - if he had to do it all over again - he would had been a Teacher (for the pension and to live in an area with a lower cost of living) and would had stuck with the one kid (me and my siblings were definitely a handful.   )


I have a degree but never entertained the illusion, like some of the kids, that I would had graduated into a job at the Hedge Fund or some Fortune 500 company. I happen to know many people with good degrees (like engineering), in their late 20s and 30s, who are working at grocery stores and other dead end job. These people I know would rather work a low income service job than learn a trade or be a technician (it is beneath them - such is entitlement, entitlement is never rationale).

A degree ~ any degree ~ is a requirement for a lot of professional programs. You can apply and be admitted to an CPA Diploma in both the United States (and other Anglo countries) with any degree (even feminist literature). You can also get into Law School. Most degrees are accepted in the military (officers), a requirement for a lot of government jobs (policemen and firemen in a lot of areas now want applicants with degrees), et al.


A Bachelor's Degree can also open up second degrees. If I wanted to be a Nurse, for instance, I am qualified with my current degree to take a condensed two year degree which will grant me a Bachelor of Nursing (equivalent to a four year), samething if I wanted a computer science degree to work as a programmer. As you can imagine, that saves you a lot of time and money if you have to retrain for another career (due to the economy or a change in your life priorities).

Myself I never entertained any illusion that a degree would had led to a job at some Hedge Fund, let alone "a" job. Right now I am in technical school and I have various associations begging me to work for them in the future, since it's very rare to have a student with a degree in my field (I am essentially guaranteed to make management unless I burn bridges).
