Thanks guys.

I got

MSI 890FX board with 1 kW PSU that was recommended,1gb ddr3, 4x saphire 5850  -- all on the way

Unfortunately 2 of the 5850's are on backorder..

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/12912/cpa-581/Lian_Li_Replacement_PC-Q06_Modders_ATX_Aluminum_Motherboard_Tray_-_Anodized_Silver_Q6ATX.html?tl=g43c241s905&id=VwsJRRDG
^^

Does that mod board make it easy to mount the cards on the extenders so they don't move around?  I don't really see how it works..

I will try and just use a thumb drive to boot from and no other hd.

Since it is just a motherboard tray with the same spacing as a normal ATX case or motherboard tray it would be the same as trying to us extenders in a standard case. I don't think it would make it any easier other than the fact that it has 10 slots and would allow you to shift the cards down a few slots but if you have a 7 slot board eventually you are going to have to deal with a card on a connector and mounting in a slot where a physical slot on the motherboard exists. If you leaned the card to one side or the other slightly so that the connector sat between 2 physical slot it might work, but I don't know how much the extenders allow for that, I haven't used any extenders yet.

This will be a mining-only rig.

Would like to be in the 750M - 1 Ghash range

A budget helps Wink

My friend and I put together a 1.2 GHps rig for about $1100.  No case, no hdd/optical.  <$1 per MHash is very doable.

5850s, AMD quad, free RAM, and MSI 890FX board with 1 kW PSU.  Should work well.  Building tonight =)

Lol, I put together a rig for <$500 that will put out almost 800Mhash/s.

Shop around is all I can say. Check lots of forums and websites for good deals.

Specs?  Any used parts in the build?

My 2x 5850 rig will end up costing me:

$260 (Saphire 5850's)
$50 (Antec 900)
$0 (RAM already have)
$70 (750W Thermaltake Tough power 775W)
$45 Foxconn AMD motherboard with Dual PCI-E
$38 Sempron 140
$0 (laptop SATA drive)

So yea, less than $500 for hopefully ~700Mhash overclocked.

You're on the money my friend! I went with a cheap case I picked up at frys that suited my needs quite nicely. Added a fan and it's good to go. I got everything brand new. Your PSU is a little bit overkill I'd say. I'm happily running 2x 5870's heavily overclocked with an i7 920 also overclocked and am doing just fine on my main rig.

Where did you get those 5850's at such a nice price? Amazon had them for $150 each with free shipping (xtreme edition) but they were out of stock so I had to go somewhere else for a little more.

$260 (Saphire 5850's)
Who's selling $130 5850 cards? The best I got an XFX from newegg that rebated down to $160.

Newegg had 'em for $140 each for several days, but I haven't ever seen them down to $130 before.  That might be a bit optimistic...

At this point backorder means you probably aren't going to get them.  We're at the very end of supply of those.
