What happens if a transaction is set to have zero fees?

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Transaction_fees
Quote
A transaction may be safely sent without fees if these conditions are met:
It is smaller than 1,000 bytes.
All outputs are 0.01 BTC or larger.
Its priority is large enough (see the Technical Info section below)

priority = sum(input_value_in_base_units * input_age)/size_in_bytes

If your transaction doesn't satisdy the conditions, chances are it will never get confirmed.

The tx may proceed after a very long time.
I used to sent some times. The longest time is 10 days.

Thanks for the information. Look like I can still send btc with zero fee if the tx is not urgent.

It's not a bad idea to do so especially if the amount I want to send is smaller than the standard fee.

No, you can send small amounts without a fee and get comfirmed quickly. It all about maturity. These are examples I found in a recent block:

0.02btc No fee (2014-10-09 08:22:02 +16 minutes)
https://blockchain.info/tx/f7861b27f270dec9e7c7425849735d5fb75526e73800c713d61838aaabda35e5

0.01btc No fee (2014-10-09 08:22:02 +15 minutes)

The blockchain (miners) will deal with unpaid transactions like a retail store would deal with someone with a sob story.
Eventually, someone in the store will take pity on them and let them participate - but, it won't be quickly.  And it won't be efficiently.  And it isn't good fort he store.  And it isn't good for consumers.

What happens is it gets delayed. Miners don't pick the 0 fee transaction any time soon. So your only option is to wait
it will get an confirmed eventually.

The rules are adequate in keeping spam away. 0.01btc is not a small amount if used for spamming, it is $3 at current prices. Would you mind if you get spammed 0.01 everyday? I wouldn't.
