Has anyone lost his wallet or have been stolen?

i'm very curios if anyone lost his wallet or the wallet has been stolen. i read the forum on how to protect it but never read a complain that someone lost or his wallet has been stolen

I've "lost" a wallet with about 30 BTC due to a hard drive CRC error and me not having made a backup. Does that count?

I lost 2K BTC in the mybitcoin fiasco

Now I keep my savings coins in cold storage with a massively complex password - with 6 different backups, as well as with trusted family members in the event of my death.

I lost ~5 coins and still haven't determined how it happened. I'm about 90% sure it was either an RPC attack or the result of having kept an unencrypted wallet on a work PC. I can't prove either but they're basically the only ways it could have happened.

wow BrightAnarchist that's a lot sorry to hear that. i'm asking the post question because i use the simple btc client with 2 wallet backups and have the client installed on a virtual machine. many people told me to install the Armory client its told that is the best around btc clients.

and i think it's enough to have your btc secured. i read a lot of posts and everyone its frighten about the stolen or lost wallet issue that's why people need to know the best practice on how to secure your wallet

I keep my wallet on a USB flash drive which is tied to one of my back teeth. Never had a single satoshi stolen yet.

If your worried about your wallet being stolen, I'd recommend having a paper wallet to hold most of your funds, and have an encrypted wallet on your PC which you use for day-to-day transactions, and when it gets low you can transfer some money from your paper wallet to your live one.

i'm familiar with most of the viruses today but how can someone steal your wallet since it's a psychical file that needs to be moved around. I know that if they have the typing keyloger on your pc they will find the key for the wallet but to steal a wallet needs to have a remote control client to access the 3th party pc etc it takes a port server. the problem it's very complicated so i assume that if someone is so stupid enough not to know that his pc its hacked then probably has a poor knowledge of pc use

Gavin i read the link that you gave me and as far as i know this was a phishing attack according to this phrase : "Our investigation has revealed a customer support interface was used to access your account" meaning the wallet used was ewallet shared on a server.

Every modern trojan horse comes with full remote acess, including file browser.

It was the same incident as Bitcoinica's first 40K+ heist - the cracker(s) compromised the Linode account manager login and reset the root passwords on 8 different boxes, one of which happened to be the Faucet machine.

not every trojan have remote control access and even if they do, you need to have a stable ip and have your firewall disabled etc its very hard to access a pc using remote access.
