I am looking for miners that support the widest range of computers (highest driver/card compatibility etc.) for both CPU and GPU.
Recommend me some. Don't tell me CPU mining isn't worth it anymore.

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

Would you care to explain a use case for this outside of a botnet or stolen electricity?

Well CPU mining isn't worth it and I am sure your victims will explain that to you.
Then again theft is usually profitable.

Education is about learning how to learn, just as much as it is about the knowledge itself. I think you need to learn how to do some independent research and analysis.
