‘You can play with you bitcoins, but you can’t pay with them’: Russia may ban cryptocurrencies by 2015

http://rt.com/business/187440-bitcoin-ban-russia-cryptocurrency/

Here we go again with Russia banning bitcoin.

I'm just curious whether Max Keiser will dare to comment on his 'Keiser Report'.

Quote
“People can play with their chips, and they can call them money, but they can’t use these surrogate currencies as tender,” Deputy Finance Minister Aleksey Moiseev told journalists in Moscow.

At least they allowed to 'play' with them

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

Exactly, its actually good news as they say ;].
They will allow paying after wider adoption, because there will be no other way.

Not much they can do. They can forbid every Russian business from accepting BTC and that's pretty much it. Maybe also freeze accounts of Russian miners selling BTC abroad, but don't think they'd do it.

They cannot criminalise majority of population.

Or can they...

Nah, they would never...

Russia can only ban bitcoin mining and transactions inside Russia. Russians can still own bitcoin and purchase things with them overseas. It's like a secret swiss bank account.

Quote
Although the draft of the proposed legislation has not been published, officials say they will open criminal proceedings against both: those who mint digital currency – usually with the help of powerful computers – and those who use them for transactions. The finance ministry has also asked regulators to ban access to exchanges and online stores that accept bitcoin.

No. Chinese gov has already deemed btc as commodity last year. It is not against law to trade. The only enemy there is central bank.

Sounds like good news to me.

Now lots of extremely wealthy bitcoins can play with Bitcoin and make the price go up.

In reality, it is hard as hard to pay for anything with Bitcoin anyway.  Most people have to go out of their way to use them.  In my city there isn't even one business that accepts them and so that leaves me reduced to only internet shopping and most of the sites I use don't accept them.

So basically the policy in Russia is pretty much like my reality.  Probably not just me.  I think I am not the only Bitcoiner on here that has bought and played but not ever actually used one in a real brick and mortar store.

They could open literally every package that goes inside russia, and look for the receipt and search for Bitcoin payments. To avoid this, the merchants should not mention Bitcoin at all in the packages to avoid putting buyers into problems, just state the equivalent in the local russian currency.
