You get paid to put their ad in your signature. It seems the campaigns have been drying up though, as people were spamming to make more btc and it's frowned upon by many members here. Most stuff campaigns are full now and only want old members, so it's not really a viable money-maker for new members.

Largely as Mr. Big replied.  If you go look over in the services section you will see many sites offering sponsorship if you put an advertisement for them in your signature.  Generally the higher your level the more you get paid because you are considered less likely to spam and post crap and you can have a more elaborate signature.  This Link is a good overview of the current programs.

They make a signature design and ask you to put into your signature area. You have to post a number of post which are constructive in order to recieve payouts. When people browse through threads, they are likely to spend more time looking at the more constructive post and usually look at the signature too. This is a good method to introduce useful post to the community while discouraging post spammers. Compared to forum advertising which cost a few BTC and only displays your ad in rotation for one week, you can use 30BTC for 200++ people to put their signature on their signature space for one month and post constructively which is more cost effective. Since this ad change applies to every single post, those browsing older threads would see the signature also.

Its purpose is to pay people who post frequently and have higher reputation,
so their service will be spread throughout the forum

yes, but some campaigns ask you to make at least 20 (or 15, or 30) posts weekly
sometimes you have to put theirs ad text not only in signature but also in your personal message (see mine for example)

you apply to be included in a sig campaign, find offers in the services section. You usually need higher ranking status (higher status= higher rewards) you must post a minimum amount weekly or monthly, and your posts must be substantial and on topic ( no "cool story bruh or  ) also, obviously, NO TROLLS!

Dont expect to get rich, but if you are on these forums quite a lot and are a regular thoughtful poster its really like free money.

Caveat- I am an investor in the company I show in my sig, so I am motivated to participate for the payouts and because I support the company I am invested in. double-good!

If your post is one line but have information or contribution to the topic, yes it is acceptable. Just do not spam the forum by saying '+1', 'I agree', 'bump' or 'LOL'. They are considered not constructive. As much as possible, give as much point and contribute as much as possible to the topic.

Good for you , now you need to slowly build up your activity to hit SR member, the signature choice is much more when you hit that level..

Just posting with consuctive post, and every sig campaign have they own rules like my sig campaign, they have rules you must post max 50 post with conductive post, change your sign campaign sign in to their site and payment automatically pay every week.
