As a member of the Bosch Group, Rexroth and Aventics pays particular attention to those initiatives that engage in raising environmental awareness, deal with the question of alternative energy sources and the efficient use of natural resources.It was this spirit that initiated the Rexroth Pneumobile Competition a few years ago. In this creative and innovative competition the participating students have to design and construct compressed air-driven vehicles before putting them through their paces at an event consisting of a number of categories and disciplines. During the course of the design and production process the students gain first-hand experience of pneumatic, that is to say compressed-air technology, while at the same time they become familiar with Rexroth products. On top of all the program presents an ideal opportunity to tighten the co-operation between the Bosch Rexroth companies and the technical universities and colleges in Hungary. The pneumobil is a compressed- air-run vehicle. The energy of air is transformed into kinetic energy by pneumatic cilinders. The first pneumobil was made in 2008 for the competition of Bosch Rexroth Company, wich has been followed by numerous successors. The making of pneumobiles has became a tradition over the years. Our team now started first in this competition. Not to sound negative or anything but what would happen to a compressed air powered car if it were to crash? All that potential energy released all at once can't be safe, can it?

Back around 1980 (maybe the late '70s), researchers and inventors put together a car that ran on air. The wheels had pneumatic motors attached to them. The engine powered a compressor, which stored air in a tank at 5,000psi. When the pressure dropped to 4,000 psi, the engine started automatically. The engine shut off when the pressure reached 5,000 psi. The engine ran at the most optimum speed for best fuel economy. The engine was entirely on automatic, controlled by the pressure regulator. The vehicle was operated by valves hooked to the throttle pedal, which sent air to the wheels. The car was a big car. I don't know what make, but maybe a big Plymouth of some kind. Because the engine always ran at optimum speed when it ran, they claimed a savings of 30% in fuel. The article was written up in Science and Mechanics magazine. They talked about startled people when the car took of without the engine running, because it ran off the compressed air in the tank, and didn't always need the engine immediately.

I doubt they will have enough energy density to be viable. Something like Hydrogen powered cars would be more practical.

Acetylene and Hydrogen are carried in tanks that are built strong enough to resist crash damage when transported. Gasoline tanks are placed in strategic areas where they will, hopefully, be damaged the least in crashes. Nothing is foolproof, but with proper care, compressed air tanks can be protected reasonably well.

Compressed air is probably too unreliable for a mainstream car. It's okay for a factory, but even with regular maintenance (which many car owners don't do with their cars), hoses at ultra-high psi firing off is a matter of when, not if. Having that happen in a car seems like a guaranteed accident between the deafening sound and power loss unless you're prepared for it. Maybe solvable, though... cool project.

Hydrogen fuel cells are definitely a better idea, probably the best I've seen so far. They seem to have a hard time perfecting it. I've heard maintenance is extreme and expensive. I know some cities have run hydrogen powered buses for evalution and testing. I think many have been parked and are for sale.

It's just a matter of getting it all worked out, putting more time into it, like with most of these things, I'm sure a lot of technology out there was considered to expensive until someone took the time to tinker with it and come up with more efficient solutions.

It doesn't run on salt water. It runs on electricity. It uses salt water as the electrolyte for its battery, which is nothing new. You still have to charge the battery with an external power source, just like any other electric car.
