They have removed the ability to trade in btc inside of counterparty.

I had to cancel my order eventually, when it didn't go through.

Right, because it won't go through with the removal of btc. They removed the ability to trade in btc withing counterwallet, but they left it in the protocol, so if you run the CLI or another version of counterparty, btc is still available for transactions.
