The Great Flood of Noah's day was only about 4300 to 4400 years ago. Since that flood wiped everyone except Noah's family from off the earth, that means that the currency system isn't more than that old.

In addition, the currency almost assuredly wasn't used by Noah. What would he use it for? Any barter he did, would have been between him and his children and grand children, etc. Who needs money for that?

Probably the oldest money system that we could connect to is way less than 4000 years old.

I don't think a worldwide flood wiping out all but one family a little over 4000 years ago is exactly the consensus view forged through rational analysis of the available historical data these days.

You need to remember that the archeologists are paid by their university, etc., that is controlled by the political community, that tells them what to tell us, just so that they can remain in power.

Let me guess. Said archaeologists are paid via a revised version of the 5,000 year old payment system, the very system that Bitcoin was designed to replace so that future archaeologists are paid with IT.

"Archaeologists uncover what they claim to be some sort of computer device resembling a fan. Sadly, no other hardware was uncovered, thus safely assuming the entity that built it went bankrupt after amassing millions in pre-orders."

The latin word for this process is called "fiat".
Which means something like "choice of the people".

This is not true. The dollar has been a worldwide currency for decades as many countries will only accept dollars and many others will accept it in addition to their local currency, while others will accept it but only unofficially.

The same was true with the British pound prior to the fall of the British Empire.

The same is not true for bitcoin as of now, although this may (at least in theory) change in the future

The Great Flood was the one that created the Black Sea and actually that's the only region the got flooded.
There may be states and kings older than that, though on a quick search I didn't find anything big before 3100 BC.

A new world wide currency has been decided upon by the people instead of a state..  Just saying.

I first learned about Bitcoin back in 2011. Back then, Bitcoin prices were hovering around $13 per coin. I learned about the concept from an Internet forum I used to frequent a while back.

But I didn't pursue it. So now I'm still stuck.

What a shame. I should have been an early adopter. Sad

What is the point of posting this? "The People" is some nebulous concept that apparently makes only good decisions and is progressive in all aspects. Bitcoin isn't inherently good or bad, or disruptive. Neither is the fact that it isn't state backed de facto evidence of superiority. If you want Bitcoin to be taken seriously, take it seriously. Don't post his idealistic trill.

If you think that the dollar is a scam because it is a fiat currency, then it is far from the first. Fiat based currencies are thousands of years old.

Before the dollar there was the british pound that dominated as the world reserve currency because the United Kingdom more or less ruled the world in a similar way that the US has massive influence throughout the world today

I would say the innovation exists in the point where something becomes a currency. When did gold and silver begin to be used as currency? Or grain? Shiny beads and blankets (small pox thrown in gratis!)?

When did the practice of bank notes take effect? I could google all these but what I am saying is currency has been around, in one form or another, from the earliest times. Barter and trade. What occurs occasionally is a commodity turns into a currency. Bitcoin is in this transitional phase. I'm not sure what the last commodity to currency event was or when it happened.

The last time society said "hey, let's call this until-now valueless object money and accept it in trade for goods and services!"? Would that event be the credit/debit card?

Historians will look at it as part of the process of humanities integration with digital technology, which we've been on for some time now and I suspect will be more fully immersive one day.

Or not.

Bitcoin does have a unique place in history though, even if it failed tomorrow, the block chain is here to stay

There are still a lot of weaknesses that need to be addressed. I'm not saying that it's not a smart invention... it is, but we need to sort out the tiny little things before declaring it as revolutionary
