Can anyone explain how/why TeaCoin began to reward 1000 tea/block at block 1290240?

Was this due to a bug in the code or some form of attack?

The reward should have remained at 1 tea/block.

No one appears to have noticed and/or cares as this coin is just about dead. The exchanges are still accepting the newly mined coins.

Of course, “developing your own cryptosystem” is the purview of only cranks and researchers, so it was reasonably assumed that none of these “altcoins”, as they were called, could ever be plausibly presented for public use.
Boy, were we ever wrong on that one.

There's some fuzziness here and a bit of imaginative reconstruction. According to the author's narrative, this was after Bitcoin had been launched but before any altcoin was. Altcoin as a category label is an acknowledged abbreviation of “alternative-to-Bitcoin”, so we're being invited to believe that somehow they were called altcoins before the phenomenon actually occurred.

My jaundiced view is that “reasonably assumed” == “never actually examined the assumptions” and the flowering of a profusion of altcoins was a surprise only to cryptographers.

Bitcoin, as the author observes, isn't a pure cryptographic cryptosystem, it overcomes some specific practical limitations of cryptography by borrowing from economic models of behaviour in order to present a candidate practical implementation of a complete cryptosystem. The introduction of economic models of behaviour has had two consequences. Firstly, cryptography is no longer high priest but CTO to economics' CFO. Secondly, the gap between the disciplinary boundaries allows the emergence of differences in disciplinary opinion and challenges to the pertinent underpinning assumptions of both.

The stage is set: finding another goldfield workable tradeoff between the crypto and the economics could potentially be as lucrative, if not more so, than Bitcoin; everyone knows the broad area where gold is likely to be discovered such a tradeoff might be found but the precise location implementable values are as yet unknown; mining equipment is readily available; exploration costs can be shared, defrayed or even turned into a profitable venture via any number of previously-developed get rich quick business schemes.

miners/investors must now compete for mining momentum/reputation and compete for blocks at each 64th halving interval (not halvings...halving intervals) ... I bought some coins before i knew this was happening. When I found out I was mad, Like the coins are worthless, but once I do the math, I realize I have a better % stake than I did before, and there are more cheap coins out there, so in some ways I am interested to see where it goes. And if the source can be looked at more carefully to ensure no other suprises exist. Its definitely an oversight that conflicts with the originally posted specs...so the coin info needs to be updated accordingly. and the fluctuating value must be understood for long-term adoption... just some initial thoughts.

I believe they have a word like "altcoin" that fits this. It's called a "scamcoin".

Given the moderate time frame over which this change is to be implemented, we expect all miners to choose to screw themselves and deploy this change before 2214.

I have an incomplete and informal list, I generally make an effort to record the halving scheme if it is concisely expressible and not just an idiosyncratic list of block heights and corresponding rewards. To provide some context, I should 'fess up from the start that I am of the semantic web persuasion and have a long-standing interest in knowledge representation.

The changes in the “halving scheme” follow the changes in typical info contained in the ANN; the earlier, more ambitious, more detailed expression gradually reduces to the most common component along the lines of: ('h', 1, 'y') = halving each year, ('h', 216000, 'b') = halving every 216000 blocks, ('r', 0.01, 'w') = reducing by 1% per week, ('rp', 1, 'w', 20160, 'b') = reducing by 1% per week or 20169 blocks. Frankly, if it's anything more complex than the basic ('h', 66666, 'b') expression, you're best advised to consult the codebase for details ... so hurrah for Open Source.

Yes, the representation is basically unusable and therefore mostly useless but I first need a corpus of common expressions of the scope and range of this domain concept before I can even begin to think about expressing it more formally in OWL.

I think infinite coin is near a halving and close-ish to being fully mined.
