i think any online wallet is the best choice for anyone starting out, since they dont have to wait the blocks to be catched up.

most people panic when they dont see their coins, but just keep in mind the miner is finding the coin and theres a fee for it.

I personally would feel safer with my bitcoins stored on my computer. With bitcoin, you don't have to trust anybody, even the online wallet service providers.

You can in fact try different wallet clients (eg. Multibit, Electrum, Bitcoin Core, Armory, blockchain.info, etc) and test them yourself. Different clients have different pros and cons and suit different users.

For me, I am using Bitcoin Core and Electrum on an offline computer.

I use two options for storing my Bitcoin.

1). Mycellium mobile wallet.i

2). Cold storage.  I have an encrypted paper wallet that I send BTC to occasionally.  It is offline, so it's very secure.
