There was a evolution in mining hardware over that last few years in bitcoin mining. CPU>GPU>ASIC hardware. It's too late to mine Bitcoin directly which uses the SHA256 algorithm without a significant amount on money invested in Asic hardware. The difficulty rate is too high for CPU and GPU mining rigs to compete with Bitcoin Asics. Your best bet is to purchase Bitcoin from circle or coinbase exchanges or mine an Alt coin which is any coin that is not bitcoin. The are several Alt coins that use different algorithms like scrypt, X11, x13 scrypt-n, cryptonight, etc... You can still use GPUs to mine those but even those coins are dropping in value so trading them on the exchanges for Bitcoin is tough. I use to make descent money mining coins but now I'm almost paying more for my power to run my rigs than I can make mining different Alt coins.
