In any case I would consider it a gay marriage since a name change and a declared sex change was done if not the surgery.
In theory they could still have babies through intercourse so biologically it could be seen as a straight marriage (man and woman) but that's beside the point.

The more you know I honestly did not know how it worked as well thanks for sharing.
From that the result of hormone therapy is it just shuts down the sex organs function making it effectively sterile/infertile.
I always thought that to be transgender and female they removed the testicles and then sowed it up again in effect changing the gender, not this alternative approach (hormone therapy)

Well now this make sense in another sense
It was considered a male female marriage even though they classified it as transgender like I thought.

Guess the they could still have babies through intercourse so biologically it could be seen as a straight marriage (man and woman)  part wasn't completely incorrect as the Russian Authorities allowed that marriage in their books because they didn't include transgender changes into the rulebook.

It looks like some of the gay rights activists see it as a straight marriage as well.

However, some LGBT activists do not agree that Irina and Alyona should be considered a gay couple.
