would the thermaltake psu 700w be too much power for the antminer s1 or is there no such thing as too much power?
I know that the psu usually only gives out what power is needed..
Have i just answered my own question?
I've got a 400w would this be too little power?
thanks guys for reading
I tested a Thermaltake 700watt on a S1 5 weeks ago. It blew out within 20 mins of use (big sparks, massive capacitor explosion). Beware!
Do not (lol, seriously) use a 400watt power supply on this. Not only it will blow up, but you will create a fire hazard (melting wires!! You'll be shocked by how quick the plastic on the wires will burn out!)
You can't compare the power requirements of a normal PC power supply to Bitcoin mining equipment. You'll also need good and thick modular power cables (icemodz). Cheap stuff will melt and damage your gear or even worse.
When testing a new power supply, make sure the cables does not run hot (extremely important).
Once it starts mining on the network you will see the green lights flash very fast.. and that's where the miner starts to cranks the amp it uses..
I'd say monitor closely the first 3 hours of the miners, checking how hot the cables are every few minutes.
You don't want to end up breaking up the gear you've just bought. See what other people are using here.
For what I use for myself:
EVGA SuperNOVA 1300watt G2 80 Plus Gold. You can safely run 3 Antminer S1 with this one. (you can even run 3 and a half S1...)
If you choose to stay with only one S1, then go for a Corsair RM750.
These two PSU both have modular cables of good quality so they won't melt down on you within the first minute you're running the miner.
Don't go any where lower than 750watt for this.
Here's why: the way that most "normal" PC power supplies gets their wattage rating is based on the overall system load that would be draw from both 5v and 12v at the same time.. You really want single rail power supply for the 12v..
You don't want to run a PSU to maximum load.. get something that has a lot extra watt (and they tend to stay cooler, longer life span).
