The ability to purchase a rank...
Say for example:
- Esquire (.5 btc) - Sovereign (1 btc)
Just an example...obviously a way different name for the rankings.

Would you donate if those ranks were implemented? What benefits would they have? I can't image many people will donate money for new ranks if they ever get implemented unless there's some special perks.

That's the point...making perks. Perhaps for highest rank, implement a "trusted marketplace" of some sort, ability to leave a +5 trust as opposed to +1...the ability to leave -5 rep as opposed to simple -1 rep and so forth. There are many features that can be implemented with ease. Hmmm, that could be also abused. Just give some BTC, give negative trust to everyone

Yes, it is possible but the amount is too low. It must be increased. IMO, it should be 3 BTC for Esquire and 6 BTC or 5 BTC for Sovereign. ~~MZ~~

Most people would rather just keep a hold of their coins, though theymos has stated in the past new ranks may be added, but I don't think they're a top priority for either the forum or users.

I'd be frickin' retarded to be able to buy yourself trust, that would be the imo stupidest thing to ever implement. The system kinda works good now, so please let it be

I don't think this would be appropriate (unless it is an extreme case like spamming multiple user's reputation). IMO being able to buy a higher weighed trust is a bad idea as the damage of any potential abuse would be done prior to it likely being detected. I do however like the idea of a lower donation threshold that would grant users some additional features that are not available to non-donating members

How about make a escrow account for special rank in marketplace.
Its work like this : 1. Special rank that provide warranty of transaction. Example : Rank A, can safely trade max 5btc Rank B, can safely trade max 3btc etc..
2. The warranty is every rank taker need to provide a "bond" equal to max trade of the rank and send to escrow [manage by BCT]
3. Cost of manage this escrow is charge every weeks with some percentage, ex. 0,5%
4. Type of "bond" is anything that can be value in market price directly but i prefer to btc only
Sound great, isnt it?
So people just go ahead to trade with the ranker, and if they scam, they lose their bond

Interesting. Thanks for your input. It sounds great on the one hand. But on the other hand Bitcointalk isn't responsible for our trades and we can actually do anything what we want here. The problem is, that these ranks gives trust to Newbies and they think that they can send their bitcoins blind to these guys. The first improvement would be the abolishment of the sale of accounts!

That's naive newbies fault then and for some people they learn the hard way. I agree that having a bond sounds good theoretically but it also opens itself up to various problems, and like you said it's not this forum's job. Luckily no escrow seems to have scammed yet (or not since I've been here), but it's probably only a matter of time before one of these newer ones does. The first improvement would be the abolishment of the sale of accounts!
Wouldn't make a difference. Banning the sale of accounts wont stop or even barely make a dent in the number of sales. In fact, it would probably have the oppsite effect and there would be more scams as many more people will be oblivious to the fact that accounts can and are in fact sold.

This is a bad idea. It would open the forum up to potential litigation. Not all scams are cut and dry so it is not 100% clear if someone has actually been scammed or not. I think this would generally cause the forum to get involved in more disputes and would just end up causing massive headaches for the moderators and would force the forum to make a decision with potentially unclear facts. It would also go against the forum's policy of not moderating scams.

If there is a low offer of accounts, there would be fewer sales -> fewer scams. I don't understand your line of thought.

Banning accounts here won't stop it but just push their trades offsite and further underground. People are often surprised to see that accounts are openly allowed to be bought and sold here and this makes people realise that they should be more careful with who they trust. Banning the sale of accounts would likely give a false sense of security that it doesn't happen. People can also trade accounts relatively safely using escrow here whereas if they're doing a deal with some randomer on a blog or something they're more likely to get scammed.

Okay, that's a strong argument ("...this makes people realise that they should be more careful with who they trust."). But maybe you understand what I mean. Account trading is always a risk, I mean it's not a Steam / Origin account, you can do business here...

So the rule is not to make 100% scam proof but to eliminate potential for scam. Rule for being scam or not, or we have say its a scam transaction or not is absolute in the hand of escrow to decide, any both party MUST agree about the rule if they doing transaction in this forum and any decision that forum make is final and no debatable. I know this not forum's job, but hey.. its not free job, and if its economical, why not?

I know and understand the risks and potential problems with the trading of accounts, but there's nothing anyone can do about accounts being traded whether we ban it or not and that's why it's allowed. People just need to be extra vigilant on who they deal with and trust as they should anyway on here.

I think, if they mak new ranks, there should be one rank where it you buy it you can customize the coins by the side of your name. Like maybe change them to happy faces or something? And another guy stated pixels around username, that would be neat too.
