Microsoft is planning to open source the full server-side .NET core stack and to take that open-sourced .NET core to Linux and Mac OS X, alongside Windows.............

M$ wants to take .net over to linux and they know it takes too long and there is no profit there. So they made it open-source, and they will fork it when it matures.

Good point.

Microsoft finally realizes open source may help. I just doubt if they will make any profit even they really gonna fork it later.

they realizes that people don't like win 8...they also see  most desktop users have no use for the Live Tiles interface. Smiley

sure!!!
for this they release the windows 8.1.
integrate smartphone usability in desktop context it is not so easy....
