BitVC Futures Weekly Settlement Summary

Due to extreme market conditions the week of 11/14, BitVC weekly bitcoin futures contracts system loss allocation was 46.1%. A detailed explanation of what happened has already been published. (http://redd.it/2mieok) A system loss allocation mechanism is a necessary component of bitcoin futures exchanges that offer high leverage, and extreme market events are unavoidable, but BitVC took steps to address users' legitimate concerns and frustrations:

- All BitVC users who had unrealized profits recalled due to system loss allocation were given free credit toward future trading fees for the full amount of profits recalled.

- A BitVC risk reserve fund was established to reduce the scale of system loss allocation in the future. 20% of all BitVC futures commission fees will go to the risk reserve fund; system losses will be borne by the reserve fund, and only if the reserve fund is insufficient will the users be allocated any system loss. BitVC is the only bitcoin futures exchange to offer this form of protection.

- BitVC implemented unprecedented transparency by publishing full details of all forced liquidations in real time. (https://www.bitvc.com/futures_btc_trades/blasting_order)

This week 11/21 also saw significant price volatility, but BitVC 11/21 bitcoin weekly futures contracts system loss allocation was only 1.877%, and bitcoin quarterly, litecoin quarterly, and litecoin weekly futures had no system loss allocation. System loss due to forced liquidation positions that could not be closed at the target liquidation price was 135.43 BTC, but the risk reserve fund covered 71.82 BTC of the loss, leaving only 63.61 BTC to be allocated to users.(https://www.bitvc.com/futures_btc_trades/settle_history)

Furthermore, BitVC has decided to reduce maximum leverage for quarterly futures contracts to 10x. Maximum leverage for weekly contracts will remain 20x for now, but if all industry competitors agree to reduce maximum leverage to 10x, BitVC will do so too.

Questions and feedback are always welcome.

I can create a thread tomorrow claiming to be from Huobi giving their web address & twitter handle. Does it prove anything ? The website & twitter handle must mention this thread for authentication.

On Sunday afternoon, November 22, at its main office in Beijing, Huobi held its second Open Day. About two dozen people attended the event. The visitors toured the office, met Huobi staff, and participated in workshop to learn some basic trading strategies and investment philosophies.

The workshop was led by Cheng Kam Ho, an experienced investment manager, and Wang Huaiqiang, the head of Huobi's futures and margin trading platform, BitVC. One of the key takeaways from the workshop was that traders need to know when to cut their losses, even if they have to conquer difficult emotions. Another valuable lesson that was emphasized is this advantage of having patience and following the trends when trading, and that trading too frequently, trying to profit from every little swing in price, usually results in loss. Actual market scenarios from the past year were used to demonstrate these lessons.

Huobi will hold another Open Day in December. An announcement about the specific date and time will be forthcoming. If you will be in Beijing, welcome to join us.

BitYes, Huobi's USD trading platform, recently conducted a survey of 334 users (40% Chinese, 60% international), and we want to share some of the results which you might find interesting:

- 55% of users have only started using/trading bitcoins within the past 6 months, while 30% have been using/trading it for more than 1 year.

- 52% of users use the platform to trade (buy low, sell high, make profit); 35% use it only to buy bitcoin; 13% only use it to sell bitcoin (maybe early adopters cashing out, or people getting around capital controls).

- 35% of users have no prior trading/investing experience; 38% have experience with stocks, 26% with forex, and 13% with futures.

- 62% said that they currently have "convenient and affordable" dollar or euro bank transfer capabilities.

- 77% do not participate in any online bitcoin communities.

Huobi co-founders CEO Li Lin and CMO Du Jun were recently interviewed by Sina Technology reporter Zhang Nan. Here is an abridged translation:

When asked to explain the falling price of bitcoin, which on January 14 reached a 15-month low of 900 CNY on Huobi, Li cited a few contributing factors. Firstly, the appeal of the rising stock market and the strong U.S. dollar has led bitcoin investors to reallocate their trading capital. Secondly, the long-term downward bitcoin price trend has necessitated bitcoin miners to sell more and more of their bitcoins to pay for their electricity and operational costs, which has created a feedback loop of increasing sell pressure. He also noted that 3700 new bitcoins are produced each day, which requires significant capital inflow to maintain the price level. Finally, Li acknowledged the role of speculation and market psychology.

Du Jun said that the current price volatility is not unusual given that bitcoin is still in its early stage of development and has a relatively low level of liquidity. He then said that those observers and analysts who are narrowly focused on the price of bitcoin are overlooking its fundamental value as a profound technological innovation. Huobi understands this and is implementing a strategy to diversify from a bitcoin exchange to a more comprehensive blockchain technology and financial services company.

To illustrate Huobi's diversification strategy, Li cited Huobi's 2014 acquisition Qukuai blockchain explorer and Kuaiqianbao (Quickwallet) multi-signature bitcoin wallet. Kuaiqianbao founder Zhang Jian became Huobi's VP of Technology and helped to integrate multi-sig technology into Huobi's security system. Security is one of the most critical factors in the long-term success of a bitcoin exchange, because any security failure that results in a loss of bitcoin can cause users to lose all confidence in the exchange.

In 2014 Huobi also founded Digcoin, a bitcoin mining subsidiary which currently contributes about 4% of the total bitcoin network hashing power, and Dangpu, a bitcoin-based P2P finance service.

Li said that trading remains the cornerstone of Huobi's business, and in 2014 Huobi began to build on its strength in the domestic Chinese market and expand internationally. It launched BitVC, a bitcoin futures and margin trading platform, and BitYes, a USD bitcoin exchange. Li noted that international regulatory policies are more lenient and bitcoin acceptance is higher than in China, and thus it essential for Huobi to aggressively pursue market share abroad.

Li stated that the industry is in a period of reshuffling and predicted that some bitcoin exchanges and mining companies will not survive the winter, yet they both remain confident in Huobi's and Bitcoin's future prospects.
