Is http://www.bitcoin.com a valid implementation of the bitcoin protocol? How are they able to use the name? Does anyone know who is behind it?

It's not related to our project. Apparently it's some company called Bitcoin Ltd. The page has been saying "alpha test coming soon" since the last summer at least.

It's unrelated. There wasn't anything there when I started.
The price of .com registrations is lower than it should be, therefore any good name you might think of is always already taken by some domain name speculator. Fortunately, it's standard for open source projects to be .org.

@satoshi: then it was not very wise of you to not register that one as well. if you didn't invent this exceedlingy smart system i'd even say 'foolish'. i don't think that this is that trivial. if they have a trademark on the name in conjunction with online financial transactions, they will sue any commercial entity using bitcoin, once bitcoin gets larger. the only corporation i could find using that name is Bitcoin Ltd Computer Software Development 34 Arlington Road Camden Town London NW1 7HU this could be their telephone number, though it seems too long. possibly two separate numbers. 024 8189 2502 - 07593 528009 Is there someone in London who could pay them a visit? Having the .com domain as well as the .org would be great. if it is not them, a telephone call or letter to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domains_by_Proxy should do the trick.

You misunderstand. As mentioned many .com names are squatted including this one. There was nothing at the page, but someone had the name.

The existence of this .com domain is going to become more and more of a problem. Alpha test coming soon. That's been "coming soon" since 2009. Maybe they're not particularly that tied to the name. Has anyone already tried to make contact?

Whoever it is hasnt registered the trademark of "bitcoin"
I think we should start a nonprofit bitcoin trade association formed of bitcoin businesses and register the trademark....before they do.

I had seen a somewhat related initiative about an association: http://fivegrinder.com/group/Bitcoin%20Mutual%20Aid%20AssociationI've registered the domain bitcoinassocation.org with the intention of donating it to such an organization should it form. I believe bitcoinfoundation.org was registered by with the same type of intent. As far as trademark, I don't know enough about the topic. If the association tries to trademark it, would those who use Bitcoin name in their bitcoin-related endeavors (e.g., Bitcoin-Central exchange, BitcoinBonus, Bitcoin 4 Cash, etc.) be - b.) able to challenge the ability for the name to be trademarked even?

No you misunderstand. Its a purely defensive trademark application. The foundation only holds the trademark in trust for the bitcoin traders so that an attack vector is prevented.

Awesome work. Forums are the new way to write public history. Such a shame we came to realize this technology now. Tesla why didn't you socialize more and talk to people about the secret of resonance and the true power of electricity? Satoshi my friend, I told you. Maria.

I hate squatters.
Not technically a squatter. It's one of the three domains that TradeHill acquired the rights to use in exchange for $1 million in equity but the rights were conditional were on them continuing operation. And yeah, there is a NZ venture capitalist who incorporated a company called Bitcoin Limited in NZ in June, but he appears to have no connection to those who are widely believed to own Bitcoin.com.

All I can say is that this is Bitcoin. I don't believe it until I see six confirmations.
