SMS: The next phase of Bitcoin adoption

Coinapult is excited to announce the re-launch of our SMS Bitcoin service. Coinapult was first to market with Bitcoin by SMS services in 2012. At that point, the service was only available in the US and Canada, it’s now available worldwide.*

Mobile phone saturation is much more developed than internet access. Of the estimated 7.1 billion people on earth, an estimated 6.9 billion are mobile phone users versus an estimated 2.8 billion internet users.

And in some African countries, payments by SMS are much more common than credit cards.

Does this work? Has someone actually tried it successfully?

Mpesa is sufficient in this field, and is definitely suitable for mobile payments.
I think its great too.

This is true, although I don't think they actually use SMS technology, it is some technology that is used on mobile phones though.

I think something along the line of SMS payments could potentially be a big innovation for bitcoin. Blockchain.info already offers this to customers of their wallet service - the text that is received by the receiver contains a link for them to get the private key of a newly created address that contains the bitcoin being sent

How about the security?

what the mean? that I would buy bitcoin via SMS on mobile service?

Quote
Our SMS bitcoin service empowers users from around the world to send, receive, lock, and obtain price information with simple text message commands.**

A standard feature phone, with no internet access, can now become a powerful tool to enable users to send Bitcoin to any email, phone or Bitcoin address, and hedge Bitcoin’s notorious price volatility using Coinapult Locks.

looks like.

Given the fact that there's a decent GSM coverage in many areas where there still is no reliable (less mobile) Internet data coverage, the idea of transacting BTC via SMS doesn't seem so bad! Heck, the more people that can profit form BTC, the better!

SMS > QR CODES
There are some risks to these kinds of services. For example sending via SMS will somewhat centralize bitcoin as the Bitcoin protocol does not support sending money to a cell phone number.

Also there are a number of scam services out there that automatically bill your cell phone bill every month for what is essentially nothing

This will be big in developing countries.
Right now, mobile penetration has increased to sufficiently high levels, but internet penetration is low.
I am not sure if there is any value add in developed countries
