Even in the entertainment industry, "comedian" Russell Brand is known for his outspoken socialist beliefs.  Which is why it was so entertaining to see Brand confronted at his latest liberal cause by a gutsy reporter willing to challenge Brand on the hypocrisy of his beliefs by asking him a simple question.

According to the Huffington Post UK:

Activist Russell Brand clashed with a Channel 4 News interviewer on Monday when the journalist asked him about the price of his own house.

The comedian had earlier joined hundreds of residents from an east London estate to march on Downing Street protesting against the threat of eviction.

Tenants in the New Era estate in Hoxton, which was originally built as affordable housing for workers, say they could face homelessness after US investment firm Westbrook Partners bought it out.

Im not sure Russell Brand fully understand what the exact problems/solutions are between the gap of rich and the poor.   Are any of us experts?

He dealt with the situation poorly this time for sure.

I agree with him on some things, he has tweeted before something like.... when you are poor you cant talk about inequality because you appear jealous, when you are rich and talk about inequality you are a hypocrite. At what point can any of us talk about inequality?    - great point no?

This is a good point. But the difference I think is that Brand isn't merely talking about inequality; he's indicting the current system. If he believes the system is not just and unfairly harms the poor, then the perception of him living lavishly suggests that while he's willing to talk about the inherent unfairness, he's not willing to give up the rewards the system has unfairly bestowed upon him. That undermines his critique of the system in my opinion. I'm not unsympathetic to the idea that there is inherent inequality in the way the US capitalist system is set up (crony capitalism), but that's not the same argument Brand is making. Or if it is, he's doing it in such a partisan and confrontational manner that I dismiss it entirely as typical class warfare rather than well-reasoned critique.

But articles like the one posted aren't for intelligent consideration or designed to spark a constructive dialogue on the topic. If the headline doesn't give it away, just read the comment section on it and you see the only reason it was posted was to provide a place for like-minded conservatives to have a place to circlejerk all over some "libtard" so the website owner can collect his advertising money. What a beautiful system!

He has given up some of the rewards the system has unfairly bestowed upon perhaps? i guess we cant be sure maybe his Hollywood career was dead anyway, wont the way he acts now burn bridges in some areas of his acting/media career?  I guess he is profiting in other ways with books sales now. Also he has given some time/put in some work to whatever campaign this was.

I agree its very basic critique of the system but he has opened eyes of some, perhaps he plays a vital role?  - for me personally i only now occasionally see what he has to say on subjects.

Promoting something like bitcoin seems way better for political change but the mainstream dont get it or use it so in the current format the system doesnt change.

russel brand happens to be a person who is highly paid, he isn't exploiting anyone or making them homeless

Be radical, have principles, be absolute, be that which the bourgeoisie calls an extremist: give yourself without counting or calculating, don't accept what they call ‘the reality of life' and act in such a way that you won't be accepted by that kind of ‘life', never abandon the principle of struggle.

I thought he handled it pretty well and it was hardly a 'hissy fit' but he's exactly right with the quote above as you can't win whether you're rich or poor and you will be attacked regardless. I think he mentioned in another video that it was less than ten years ago that he was destitute and collecting dole (state unemployment benefits), but I find it kind of bizarre that people expect 'socialists' to be penniless all their life and live in squats yet the moment they turn their life around and aquire some wealth and move out of squalor and poverty they're suddenly a hypocrite when that's not the case. Brand quite clearly doesn't have all the answers and maybe he is a hypocrite in some regards but I've never met a human being who wasn't in exactly the same position poor or rich.

Ok he could have handled it better hows that? i guess it was ok, it showed he has a heart i think.  A short answer like what saddampbuh posted would have been alright.

Brand is making an impact politically... right or wrongly, misdirected, whatever, he is trending pretty fast for "boring political stuff".

Lets look at his youtube subscriber stats vs someone like infowars or the young turks - a decent comparison and he is growing much faster vs others, lets also bare in mind he covers much UK stuff and we are smaller vs USA.

Infowars: (been around for years)

919,403 subscribers

The Young Turks: also been around for many years:

1,838,586 subscribers

Russell brand:

792,674 subscribers already, he started this trews thing 9 months ago, had like 100k subs on his channel iirc, in 6 months he would probably be #1 "political show" on youtube at this pace.

I can honestly say that there is nothing that makes me question human nature quite like the circulation figures of The Sun.

Well done Rupert Murdoch - you have succesfully undermined a nation in nurturing its citizens deepest and most closely guarded bigotries and vanities.

In the light of the Milly Dowler phone hacking scandal you will forgive me if I don't take The Sun's character assasination of Russell Brand as anything but the highest of praises to Russell the human being and man.

He must be doing something right .

Brand had a run-in with Fox News as well (another piece of the Murdoch empire), so it's not surprising to see The Sun target him.

Its good news for brand really, the argument by the sun is terrible, brand gets more hits off the back of it.  They are either stupid or want to send people his way.
