It's currently broken for me due to a bug, but as soon as it's fixed I'm going to send 0.2 BTC to the first 10 friends of mine who comment on a wall post I'll make about it.

I think it's a nice way to show to your friends that Bitcoin is real, and get them to open their mind.

Will this be the way to make Bitcoin viral?

See the technical details here.

I've been working on such a thing, too but stopped it for several reasons. I hope you provide (without scamming people Wink ) what I had in mind, so here was my feature set:

* Send coins to facebook friends
* instantly
* without fees
* even dust down to 1 Satoshi
* allow to send to all friends with a timeout (if coins don't get collected aka. the friend does not use your app), they return to your balance within a week)
* outbound transactions would of course cost the normal fees

Reasons I did not continue this was that I did not get positive response here on the forum and considered you - the forum members - the first wave of people to spread coins on facebook. Secondly I was pretty sure Facebook would find a reason to ban this app very quickly. Thirdly I did not feel too confident taking a long time responsibility for your coins.

If Facebook allows this app to survive some weeks, I am sure it will reach millions of users.

Actually my app works in that it can receive coins to facebook users and send in and outbound but it is ugly, therefore please go for it!

For me it was a great lesson on how easy it is to prototype such an app with all the book-keeping already in place within bitcoind.

Care to share any technical details? How does it work?

1) Generates a new private key
2) Sends fund to the newly generated address.
3) Sends a link to the private key in a Facebook PM.
4) Upon claiming the private key is then swept into the receivers wallet.

It uses the Facebook javascript SDK (http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/javascript/) so does not share any of your Facebook info with blockchain.info. The new private key is also never shared with blockchain.info.

The sender retains a copy of the private key in their wallet so can reclaim the bitcoins at anytime by sweeping that address.

Fill out the form pre filled with your Facebook contacts.

Add a custom message.

Follow the link in the PM:

Your tx list should list the name of the friend you sent this to, along with a Facebook icon.
It seems to be working.

I feel like this didn't get enough attention so I'm bumping it!

ripper234 consider editing your OP with piuk's explanation.

My personality type: INTJ - please forgive my weaknesses (Not naturally in tune with others feelings; may be insensitive at times, tend to respond to conflict with logic and reason, tend to believe I'm always right)

Added URL

what is the URL for this?

No special URL for this feature, you just choose "send money" from within blockchain.info's wallet, and choose Facebook.

BTW, my bitcoins were snatched in no time. 2 Existing Bitcoin users, and 8 people who've never owned a Bitcoin in their life, now have 0.2 extra BTC.

They encountered a few errors trying to redeem them, but at least some of the users managed to get it to work finally.

I encourage you all to try this experiment with your friends and post the results.
