I guess what I really meant to say is that skill is less important in Clash of Clans. There isn't much beyond figuring out where to place buildings and where to deploy troops.
you may not believe that clans takes skill, but trust me, it does. when i was in bronze league i use to overwhelm other players by spamming barbarians. that shit don't work in silver. you need a balanced army and that balance is like walking a tightrope. you also have to know not only where to place troops but when to play them. an example is dropping a giant to hold defense aggro so you can drop a wall breaker to get through the walls and then sending in your barbarians and archers. you can't progress unless you understand each troops role. you also have to know how to lure champions and clan castle troops away from the base and when to use spells. and that's just for attacking. defense is basically a whole different game and so is building order and building placement. there is alot more to it than somebody who never passed bronze league would know about.
The difference is that you spend time waiting for rewards instead of that time honing your skills in a game like LoL or CS. But like you said, to each his own.
this is also inaccurate. you don't wait for rewards. you will earn nothing by simply waiting. you earn rewards by defending and attacking for resources in between your upgrade periods. there is a fine balance between all of these mechanics that eludes you cause you have not put enough time in the game.
