Please elaborate. From what I see, you can purchase gems with money, which can be used to unlock every aspect of the game without waiting (upgrading buildings, getting gold/elixir).

Mobile gaming is a joke. Look at Micromon; it's a Pokemon clone filled with in-app purchases. Still, kids these days still spend money on it, because it's the only type of game they've been exposed to. 10 years ago, would anybody have taken Pokemon seriously if you had to pay $0.99 to unlock new areas or buy Pokeballs?

As another example, look at Angry Birds. Is it an original concept? Of course not. Flappy Bird? Nope. Candy Crush? Just a clone of Bejeweled. Many of the top mobile games right now are blatant ripoffs of games that have existed for years already.

From what I see, mobile is moving gaming backwards, not forwards.

I agree with b!z.  Started out fun at first, but soon you realize no matter what you do there is always a way to beat you down.  Also the longer you play the longer it takes to build/upgrade things.

I'm in a clan with some family members, so I can't just quit... so I only log on once a day to collect my resources.

Never was fun in my opinion. Mobile gaming is just a modern rehash of 2006-era Facebook games (think Farmville, Mafia Wars). Invite your friends, come back everyday, pay to win.

For me, Clash of Clans is a great game where the time limits give it value. I mean, think if you could shoot up the charts in one day. The gems can be earned at a good pace and paying is not too heavily integrated. Don't have what you want? Wait a couple hours, or steal it from another user. Paying to play is for people who have no patience. When you work at the game, it becomes fun.

purchasing gems does not give any strategic advantage over another player during PVP. both sides get the same buildings and troops. people who spend nothing still have access to an unlimited supply of gems. buying gems is just for the impatient or those who want to support the developers.

Clash of Clans is not "special" though. Like I said, the same concept has existed for years. You could just argue that it's a Farmville-type game with a village theme instead of a farming theme.

Buying gems does not allow you to unlock higher level buildings at an earlier level.  But they do allow you to reach the level needed FASTER than a person who does not buy gems.  So a person using gems will advance faster than a person who does not use them.

the advantage is only time. there is no advantage when playing against another player. that's not pay to win.

pay to win is buying something that non-buyers don't have access to and provides an advantage over another player.

that's how F2P studios make money. if they could buy stuff that was not available with the free model then ya that's BS. but for a game that was released for free you have to take in consideration the time effort and money it took to give us that game for free. they deserve to make a little something.

If you took away the waiting element of Clash of Clans, there wouldn't be much of a game left over. The F2P model might work, but I don't like the way it lets players substitute waiting with paying money.

I personally think Valve has pulled off F2P well with games like Dota 2 and CS:GO. Money can only be spent on cosmetic items that have no effect on gameplay, unlike in Clash of Clans where gems are a major focus of the game.

strangely enough i like the waiting element. that's part of what makes it unique. when i saw my first upgrade time of 1 day i was like WTF are they serious? but now that i check on my town daily it's a nice change of pace from the rush through it in a day or two games that is the industry standard. the fact that it will take you 6 months to a year to build everything provides a sense of accomplishment that a 10-20 hour game lacks.

This model is wrong. Do not get me wrong. I love F2P games, games like DOTA 2 or Smite. They are both prime example of how you should do F2P model. When you can buy only cosmetic items and nothing, absolutely nothing that changes you gameplay - that is real F2P.

You're right. If it's F2P, then obviously you can play it for free. I think what Slark and myself are trying to say is that there are games where the "pay" aspect has a greater role than in other games. The latter is better, at least in my opinion, because the game revolves more on skill rather than paying money.
