I have been looking at the gaming websites to see what the reaction to the Microsoft news would be ... and it isn't good!

Have a look at IGN posters http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/12/11/you-can-now-pay-for-xbox-and-windows-content-with-bitcoin

Other forums have similar reactions. I think we have a lot of teaching to do.

I felt the same way before I actually learned about it. I just thought it was some digital token that you buy. I.e. nerd money. I didn't know anything about the Blockchain.

I would have thought that the people who don't know a ton about Bitcoin would have just shrugged it off as just another way to pay for their favorite Microsoft products. Why the hate?

I saw a tweet from someone today who was interested in learning about it, sent him a few bits via changetip. Led to a nice conversation regarding bitcoin and he said he would take to the gaming forum he is a member of. (I am not much of a gamer myself.)

Well if you hacked youtube and changed all the "Hitler reacts to...." video titles to "Gamer reacts to..." probably nobody would notice for months.

Impression of actual comments from OPs link though seems like about 50% latent curiosity, and 50% typical thoughtless babble.

Although... I can see that some PC gamers with memories long than last Thursday, could have an axe to grind with bitcoiners about how it screwed with GPU pricing in the 2011-2013 timeframe.

People fear things to what they have never been introduced before. ANything new is bad for a lot of people.

But it doesn't affect the majority only people who use it so it shouldn't have struck up such a fuss.

Most buyers might be wondering about this:

If i can pay straight away with dollar and get the product shipped out, why would i be bothered to exchange the dollar to btc and then only make the purchase? That's another extra step in the process.

But it's okay. It goes a long way to convince people

The mental immune system kicks in with most people who are not receptive to new ideas. Everything about bitcoin is contrary to what they know about the world so they quickly reject it without thinking. We've invited them to the party but they don't think it will be any fun. Good buying opportunity for the smart. A transfer of wealth from the close-minded to the open-minded. Not a bad thing. Smiley The bitcoin experiment is teaching us a lot about human nature.

I will never forget this Time magazine cover from 1995 : http://img.timeinc.net/time/magazine/archive/covers/1995/1101950703_400.jpg

CYBERPORN - EXCLUSIVE: A new study shows how pervasive and wild it really is. Can we protect our kids--and free speech?

I was 13 at the time and on the Internet and I thought, "Wow, these people just don't get it." Actually I found the cover offensive. Same feeling I have now (although now I am not offended by these people, I just see them as ignorant). The sheep must follow, sad as it is. Back then the Internet was a scary thing. It took the average person awhile to catch on but now they are obsessed with it and carry it around in their pockets. Times change quickly and nobody ever looks back.

The people who make those kind of comments against Bitcoin really are just making stuff up, if people are stupid enough to believe them with all the information out there then that's their business, I've given up trying to argue with people who choose to live in an alternate reality and just make shit up, much easier to just mock them because they're so entertaining.

From the gamespot.com comments:
Quote from: Too-DementeD
... it can also have a real negative effect on actual legitimate currency.

Example. People were bulk-buying AMD GPUs using bitcoins, as they were cheap. What happened? AMD GPU prices in USD/GBP/whatever other REAL currency there are, skyrocketed. I'm sure that's great for AMD and bitcoin users, but it's bad for everyone else.

Here we see one reason why a gamer in particular might harbour ill-feeling for Bitcoin.  Over the past few years, miners have competed with gamers for graphics cards, pushing up prices in the short-term.  Of course, gamers are not excluded from the general observation that almost all adults are completely clueless when it comes to basic economic principles.  This simple case of supply and demand quickly drives the hapless individual to an absurd conclusion.

This comes in addition to the usual Bitcoin FUD.  You'd think gamers might be more sensitive to baseless media spin given that gaming itself is often attacked in the media as "warping young minds" and "training killers".

A lot of hostility aka a lot of uneducated people making stupid jokes.

Shows how far Bitcoin still has to grow and how much it needs to educate people, so that it can become more mainstream.

This is actually a credible reason for gamers to be hostile to Bitcoin.
I was initially surprised by the reaction - I expected indifference, not hostility.
But if Bitcoin miners are pushing up the cost of graphics cards, then it is natural for gamers to be hostile.  Grin
