The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

I generate keys from bitaddress.org and always have a copy of the private key. It's the one that starts with 5xxx...

You just keep that somewhere and you're good.

Over time can we expect many users to have lost BTC due to similar issues (bringing the total BTC available to less than 21mil) and they would not be recoverable by anyone?

Here you go:

http://www.runtime.org/howto_datarecovery.pdf

You can find the program in your favorite file sharing platform...

If it has not been overwritten a good runtime recovery could do it as pedrog said
Just in case i'll mention recuva if the other one fails.

Just use the export private key feature, and password protect it.
Just store it in your email, and you should be set.
