Choose from the following:

https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet

You can't go wrong with Bitcoin Core, Armory, Electrum, or Green Address.  If you don't want to download the entire blockchain, then don't go with Bitcoin Core, as it'll take several hours to sync.

You don't have to choose 1 wallet to use. You can choose at least 2. One for hot wallet that you use for small payments and another one for cold wallet which is long term storage.

IMO Multibit for a fast on-computer wallet, This is good since you don't relay on a website to be online to have access to you wallet and you have your own private key, the disadvantage being the security risk, Blockchain is also a good online wallet.

I'd recommend Electrum for ease of use, if you're more concerned about security I'd consider using Armory or Bitcoin Core.

I'd recommend a paper wallet for long-term storage. If you like the idea of a bitcoin wallet smartphone app, I'd recommend Mycelium. It's great. There are lots of good desktop bitcoin apps. I use bitcoin-qt.

Best advice treat the private key like gold.  Put it on a usb and paper wallet.  Put those in a safty deposit box or other safe places.  Treat them like money as they are money.

You can get physical wallets aswell.   One example is my sig campaign I'm in put so much BTC in a account and put the paper wallet in the silver wallet, and store it safely.  Other options are like trezor that is a hardware based.   You have lots of options if you want a wallet such as these.

I would suggest using bitcoin core. It is the oldest and safest wallet.

This what I use:

blockchain - for day to day bitcoin spending - you must download the backup wallet and put it on safe place.
bitcoin core - install it in a separate computer only for bitcoin.
brain wallet - use at least 50 pass phrase.

Electrum would be easy to use and dooesnt depend on downloading the blcokchain which takes hours.

If you want high security use an Armory wallet, but thats for advanced users.

For a newbie, Electrum should be the easiest to start with. When you get more and more bitcoin, you should then create a cold wallet to keep most of your bitcoin safe.

I am using electrum too. It doesn't need to download the whole blockchain and you can start using it in minutes.
