Who's the unknown mining pool that's contributing the 37 some odd percent of hashing power?

Some private entity?
Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

* rjk bangs his head against a brick wall...

Search a bit, you would find probably a dozen other threads that say the same thing.

TL;DR: Nothing evil, just inaccurate reporting. use http://blockorigin.pfoe.be/

EDIT: Unknown does not represent a single entity.

they have been testing existing tech on EclipseMC. A search will give some more info on that.

If you're not excited by the idea of being an early adopter 'now', then you should come back in three or four years and either tell us "Told you it'd never work!" or join what should, by then, be a much more stable and easier-to-use system.
