The boards are again becoming unusable. People are creating multiple accounts day in and day out. Then reposting nonsense again and again. Why the F are we allowing this?

Newbie Jail never kept spammers out, it just kept real newbies out of the conversations. People that are making accounts to spam have no problem waiting a few hours before being allowed to spam, they just create accounts in 6 hour shifts/waves. What newbie jail did was discourage the person with the intention of looking around at all of the boards and finding topics that actually interest or apply to them. If someone hears about Bitcoin and wants to come learn more, they should be able to without being penalized. If we penalize real newbies, they might just lose interest and leave.

Maybe IP bans for the spammers then? That might help a bit.

There's no amount of restrictions that we could put in place that would stop the worst offenders. The determined ones will bypass anything to continue their trolling or spamming but we just deal with them as they come and are reported.

We've requested the newbie jail multiple times already with no success.

how about e-mail verification for account creation? It should at least double the time needed to create a new account, assuming account creation on the forum has a captcha.

Again, as above, that probably won't stop the persistent trolls. They'll likely get around it someway. Hopefully there's a better captcha system on the new forum and that might cut bots down, but I guess even they can usually be bypassed somehow. It's a never ending battle with one side always trying to outsmart the other.

Would it be possible to "hellban" users, where someone can still post, their posts are just hidden from everyone else? Seems like a somewhat more effective solution against repetitive trolls. Perhaps even make it so their posts show up to the IP they are using if they log out or log into a different account. I doubt there is anything like this, given the forum software, but it seems like the ideal solution to combat those who make accounts knowing they will be banned.

It has been proposed before but it would unlikely work, though it would be an interesting experiment. It's easily figured out and once it has been and then the whole process will be largely futile.

Obviously there's no foolproof Troll-B-Gone solution to be found, but measures that make it harder to create shill accounts should have an effect on many kinds of troll, the mentally ill ones excluded.

Anything that significantly makes it harder for them, would most likely affect legimitate users more.

And there's plenty of proxies and VPNs about which persistent trolls will just use without having to pay anything.

How is it effecting them? Being faintly annoyed? They should get over it. There is likely no solution. See my above post below, but feel free to put forward one yourself: There's no amount of restrictions that we could put in place that would stop the worst offenders. The determined ones will bypass anything to continue their trolling or spamming but we just deal with them as they come and are reported.

Maybe a solution would be to make newbies make one or two posts in the beginners section, to take away the total time logged in requirement, but add in a time since registration requirement (maybe you cannot post outside of the beginners section until you have been registered for at least say 90 minutes).
While this would still negatively affect legitimate users, the affect on them wold not be as detrimental/negative as the previous version of the newbie jail, and I don't think many people would mind making one introduction post plus one additional post in the newbie section and waiting an hour and a half. (maybe there could even be a ticker that counts down the time until you can post from that account).
This would also not stop all the spammers nor the worst offenders but it would likely at least force them to put more effort into spamming and would stop the lazier spammers.
