I was looking in the forum design document and it says that all of the posts are going to be threaded.  Will there be an option to view it flat like how it is now?

I don't think so. If that was possible, then people who used the flat view would likely respond to the wrong people all the time, ruining things for people who used the threaded view.

So wait, I didn't see that part, does that mean it will be schemed similar to the way reddit does it?

If so, not sure if I really like that format. Never really liked that about reddit and for forums I think the existing format works the best.

The problem with the flat layout is that off-topic remarks need to be strictly controlled in order to keep the thread even remotely readable.

I don't like Reddit's threading that much, but I think that this is mostly a UI issue. It hides deeply-nested comments and discourages long replies. Usenet, mailing lists, Slashdot, etc. are threaded, and the threading works well in these cases IMO.

One large site where the flat layout works well is 4chan. But this forum is very very different from 4chan, so I don't think that it's good to use 4chan as a model in general.
