Pool Hardware

HI Guys,
im here as i need some advice while setting up a pool.
I already created a nice website so all i need to start over is the hardware requirements to launch a pool.

As i dont have any cash to spent on air i would want to start with the cheapest possible solution.

So, whats your suggestion concerning a vps/dedi?

what backed are you using? - it will make a difference. Ozcoin uses ecoinpool.
My pool started on an underpowered VPS, within a month I had purchased and colocated a dedicated server.
We now run 5 severs with large VMs for mining operations.
The minimum I use for a mining node is 8GB ram and 2cores.
database/www server runs 8cores and 24Gb ram

My suggestion is work out what requirements you need and get something bigger than that. Otherwise you just give yourself LOTS of pain, done it once, seen it happen to others 10 times or more.

If you have no cash this may not be the best venture to undertake, running a pool doesn't bring big profits unless you have high fees and a huge userbase.

If you haven't already I would suggest you look through the pools subforum, particularly at new pools that have failed, learn from their mistakes and do better.

What payout system are you planning on using?

There is a lot to consider when running a pool, you aren't just putting up a "nice website" you are dealing with peoples money (in the form of Bitcoins) good security is essential

P.S. some people have attempted to run mining pools on home connections - none have lasted long or have quickly paid to find hosting with better than "home" internet connection/speeds.

Well, considered i put the required money on the table for a server hosting etc, what should i look for?
Im a bit overhelmed right now, here a few things you may can help me with.
1, The OS, any suggestions? Im familiar with ubuntu right now.
2. I want to use poolserverj and simplecoin
4. For the payout system Prop.
5. 32 or 64 bit?
6. Considered the pool starts at 5-20 GH/s, any precise hardware or hosting plan suggestions?

This is still on topic for me, so if anybody is kind enough to answer the above questions i would be more than happy.

You forget the bandwith.
If you count 1kB for each getwork from client to server, 20GH/s give you somewhere around 5kB/s for the getwork data.
5 kB/s = 421 MB/day = 12.5 GB/month
I have know idea how much data it costs to stay on the network (receiving new transactions and blocks), but that part is the same for each pool.

For the OS, I would advise the one your most familiar with, ubuntu in your case.

For 32 or 64 bit, if you don't have more than 4GB in your system 64 bits is useless.
64 actually costs a little more memory because the pointers are bigger.

About the rest I know nothing or close to nothing

Yep, bandwidth is the reason i never approached to host it from my home connection, however, i could get 10mbps upstream here with 250gb volume. At the moment im on a 2mbps upstream.

I found webtropia for example offers full flat for additional 10 or 15$ per month, so this is solved for me.


The questions that remain for me are:

What kind of processor do i need for 20 GH/s?
How much RAM do i really need?
How big should the HDD be?
Do i need hardware RAID?
Do i need SSD for the OS?

why proportional - well known as an exploitable payout system that costs your regular miners and rewards "strategic miners" unfairly?

64 bit ubuntu, bare minimum 4gb ram , but 8 if you can, pool software can be very memory intensive, especially if you are running mining, database and www from same server.

are you a good coder?
poolservj has been unmaintained since late last year.

I'd suggest you aim for more than 20ghash

Concerning the payout structure i haven't made any deeper research yet, of course this is a point that needs further digging.

So the hardware question is pretty much solved by now.

I also looked into p2pool but i see no real difference in running a node with p2pool than running a pool as discussed. Would be nice if somebody can shed some light here.
