Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's
computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be
reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

http://mtgox.com is the largest exchange and you should be able to purchase your bitcoins there.

Tangible Cryptography is selling their Surplus coins. Possibly the best deal for an order of that size. - http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=87094

depending on what you mean by large quantity ... I'd recommend campbx over mtgox. They move much quicker.

Campbx is terrible. They have 2 deposits from me that cleared over a week ago (one from my bank and one from Dwolla). They responded by saying "they are looking into it". Both Dwolla and my bank have confirmed that the bill pay was cashed and that the Dwolla funds were sent without a return.
