Bitcoin purists remind me of investors who only stick with blue chips. They feel really good about themselves: "I own 500 shares of IBM! Woohoo! I'm a smart investor! I only buy good companies!" Then year after year they watch their investment go absolutely nowhere. Do you know why? It's because they bought something that already had it's day in the sun 50 years ago.

Altcoins do have a valid purpose. They are attractive to speculators. They provide a path to BTC for miners who have aging mining equipment investments that have been largely displaced by BTC asics. They tend to spur more ongoing overall innovation than the core BTC dev team.

Unfortunately, their low hash rates and low marketcaps have hindered mainstream adoption. Hwoever, this may change with the proliferation of scrypt asics. For now, it would be perfectly reasonable to treat them as distressed assets for investment purposes.

I dont think Bitcoin will be the only digital-money only. There would be others digital-money (or altcoin) standing side by side with Bitcoin. Some of them could be.. LiteCoin, the silver of Bitcoin and Stellar.

there have always been a lot of new miners and bitcoiners who see new altcoins as a way to begin in bitcoin world. its just too many scam coins being launched keeps draining the industry.

While bitcoin stays at the top of the list, alts probably never gonna die. (an exception is Ltc, it is going to die)

It is impossible to stop people to create alts. Every new alt coin is going to claim that its the faster, the more secure and having the lastest tech.

In order to say something is "shit" or "hit". You have to give it enough time to grow (5+ years). Majority of alts aren't even one year old yet.
